For those into collecting German militaria, this appears to be a source that you might find of interest. The website address is:
www.germanmilitaria.com (http://www.germanmilitaria.com)
Dealing with original militaria from the 1933-1945 period, the site is in transition as of this writing and only the homepage is displayed.

Can anyone tell me if there any records that may indicate what awards were awarded to German volunteers involved in the Spanish Civil War. I am trying to find out if Unteroffizer Franz Josef BIRNBAUM a pilot with 10 (Pz)./SG 9 was awarded the Spanish Cross in Bronze with or without swords. I among his other documents I have a "Vorlaeuiges Besitzzeugnis" which just states that "Dem FJ Birnbaum ist unter dem heutigen Tage das Spanien-Kreuz in Bronze verliehen wroden. Dieser Ausweis verliert mit dem 31.7.1939 seine Gueltigkeit Berlin, den 31 Mai 1939" But I have no idea if he was a soldier or a civilian. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Colin

If you go to this site and read the complete description at the bottom of the page, it may provide some of the information you want. There is also a photograph on this page but it did not open on my computer.

(I went to this URL, but apparently the item had been sold and was no longer shown on the site.
The site, however, can be accessed at:

I think the text of the award document would have mentioned "with swords" (mit schwerten) but it does not.
