A great online service for libary researches in Germany is Subito. They are connected to some of the major German Libraries, where you could search documents and best of all, you can order copies of these documents online. Documents are sent by Email (TIFF format) or if larger by post.

To enter Subito (sorry, it is a German service) use URL: http://www.subito-doc.de/subito/admin/login2.htm

2. Click the button "GASTZUGANG"

3. Select the database
"Zeitschriften" - here are most original
documents, i.e. manuf.
docs.
"BUCHER" - here are mostly books
older and newer ones
"BIBLIOTHEKSADRESSEN"
- here you find addresses
of associated libraries

4. Fill out the search form:
"STICHWORT" - type your keywords here
normally that's enough

5. Click the "SUCHEN"-button at the top
left corner

6. Now the system comes up with a list
of relevant documents.

7. Use the link of a document.
Now you get more detailled infos.

8. Have a look to "Bestandsanzeige:"
at the lower part of the page.
Here you a get a list of libraries,
which have your documents available.

9. Use the "Bestellung" link to order
the document at the libary of your
choice.

10. Fill out the order form

"Autor" = author
"Titel" = title of book/article
"Jahrgang/Heft" = year of publication
magazine number
"Erscheinungsjahr" = year of publication
"Seitenangaben" = pages

fields with text "(Pflichtfeld)"
are musts. However, especially
page references are not always
necessary.

11. Click the button
"Weiter im Bestellablauf"
(If you do not get a new input form
you have mostly tried to order a
year, which is not available at the
libary of your choice, therefore
hit your browser back button to
check your entries)

12. Now select your user type
Go the area marked "Nutzergruppe"
for foreign orders select
"Benutzergruppe 2" (that's important,
if the document is mailed by post).
Orders from Germany may select
the cheaper "Benutzergruppe 1"

13. At "Bestelldienst"
click at "Normalbestellung"
for normal response times (i.e.
1-2 working days) or at
"Eilbestellung" for more expensive
quick services

14. Continue with button
"Bestellung mit erweitertem
Bestellformular"

15. At "Bemerkung zum Dokument"
you may fill in additional infos.

At "Angaben zum Besteller"
fill in your personal data
"Institution oder Name" - your name
"Erganzung oder Vorname" - first name
"PLZ/Strabe und Nr." - left postcode
right street+no.
"PLZ/Postfach" - normally unfilled
"Ort" - your town
"Land" - select your country

At "Ansprechpartner"
you fill in your contact infos
in case of further questions

The box in the "Angaben zur Lieferung"
section gives you a pricing idea of
the library. Prices are DM for the
first 20 pages and additional pages.

At "Liefermoglichkeiten"
select "Email" and fill in your
Email address, select the TIFF-button
or one of the other services offered
If you use "Post" select your country

Click also
"Alternative Lieferung per Post"
so you will get your document by post
in case of failed Email services.

16. At "Zahlungsarten"

17. At SUBITO Ruckmeldung

Dear Horst,

Thank you for that detailed explanation and welcome to LWAG! In reading the above, I think you intended to note the cost of the 20 pages, but may have overlooked putting it in. I was also a bit confused regarding the TIF pages. Will the library scan the documents for you and then e-mail them or, alternatively, make hard copies for conventional mailing? Also, do they supply information on microfilm?

This may sound simplistic, but could you give some examples or describe what the libraries have that may be of interest? I assume these are separate from the BA/MA.

Regards,
Richard

Richard,
Subito is just a gateway to some of the
most important online libraries in Germany,
most of them are University Libraries like
the Technical University Berlin.

There are a lot of infos and original
documents of the German Aviation Industry,
the Luftwaffe and the German Aviation
Authorities, i.e. Annual Reports of the
Aviation Industry, Luftwaffe Reports,
Aviation Registers.

Prices and delivered document types
depend on the library, which you select.
At most Subito associated libraries you
can select between Email transfer of the
document (which is scanned for you by the
library and is transfered in TIFF format
to you by Email), Fax, standard Mail (this
one is always selected, if the document
has to much pages, more than 25-30), or
they prepare the file for FTP transfer
for a download via Internet.

I used TU Berlin for several times.
Their price for up to 20 pages is 7DM.
Normal reply time for the document here
are two working days.
