Dear Jaap,
You requested a bit more detail on WASt material. As I posted elsewhere I obtained via a publisher the losses for all units operating over Britain in January to May 1944. The records supplied were very detailed and listed by unit (Gruppe) and date of loss. Information was supplied in the form of photocopied A-3 sheets with all rubber stamps and signatures. The full details of personnel losses are recorded with details of NOK, date and place of birth, and extent of injuries - place of burial. Details of the aircraft are also given with circumstances / place of loss and target.
Shortly after getting these reports, WASt apparently closed their doors to public and would not release information to researchers.
I now hear that service has been resumed, but believe only transcripts of the reports are given and no personal details other than name rank and number. I have not used this office myself, so hope someone else can tell us how the system ticks today.

Dear Jaap,
a department of the Bundesarchivis in Koblenz where you can find pictures. Theses pics are devided in serveral terms like Bf 109, FW 200
or Panzer IV etc.
Although you can find impressive original films of all Propaganda Kompanien (propaganda platoons).
The address:
Bundesarchiv Koblenz
Potzdammer Str. 1
56003 Koblenz
Phone +49(0)261 505-0
Fax +49(0)261 50526
Umfortunaly there isn't any kind of Link
on the web site of the Bundesarchiv directly to Bundesarchiv Koblenz yet.

Hi Simon,
with reference to WASt reports, these are indeed available again and I suspect the archive is attempting to streamline their replies. So yes, if you simply ask for some details you will get a reply. I have recently specifically asked for document copies and these were supplied. I gave a specific reason for this, namely that I wanted to see the signatures on the reports.
As before, the birthplace is censored and details of injuries too, but this is acceptable.

An other interesting German archive is the Historisches Archiv des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. With an archive about the Reichsluftfahrtministerium. http://www.dlr.de/archiv/

Hello Jaap,
I made a mistake, and re-listed one of your existing messages before I could post to it. Please delete it. (Done, RTE). What I wanted to ask was if the WASt site in Berlin is the one I should be asking for help in the record search I am conduction for the Frankfurt raid of Oct. 4, '43, and happenings in NW Europe in Sept. '43. Something occurred to me, and that is getting in touch with relatives of Luftwaffe pilots involved, if the pilots are deceased. Records may have been kept with families, as well as in Berlin. What are my options by using this LWAG site to facilitate this. I would like to try it through this method, as well as other sources I already am using. I have found English on the German sites.
Any helpful feedback from you would be appreciated. Thanks,
Gordy.

WASt.
To my knowledge the WASt files will give you only information about accidents and crashes during World War II. For finding persons who have survived the war and still are at live or relatives of those persons you can try the telephone guide of Germany. If you are lucky you will be able to locate two or three persons and can send them a letter. An other possibility is, if you know the town were the person is born, send a letter to the "Einwohneramt" for information. It will cost you about $10 till $15 per question and they are allowed by law only the give information to relatives. So this is questionable. A third possibility is write a letter to the Jägerblatt for an announcement or to one of the associations. The last possibility I can think of is find an expert in Holland, Belgium, France or Germany who knows something about the battle of that day. Why not send a letter to a local newspaper or put a question on this board? I know it is difficult but with so many possibilities?
Good luck,
Jaap

Dear friends,
Just recently I came across a, for me, new website, "Archive in Nordrhein-Westfalen". URL: www.archive.nrw.de/ (http://www.archive.nrw.de/) The exciting part of it is that it has the possibility of searching under "Recherche".
I tried several possibilities and got several "nice" results. E.g. try "luft" and you will recieve 17 pages of fonds in several archives. One of them was "Luftgaukommando VI" in Stadtarchiv Heiligenhaus. Whom of you would have gone to Heiligenhaus for information about Luftgaukommando VI? Not me.
