Does anybody have got information about present status of the FW 200 Condor that has been recovered from a norwegian fijord - I guess two years ago - and breaking during the recovery action ?

Hello Volker !!

Judging the photos I saw on Flugzeug Classics ( correct name ? ) I really doubt the plane will be restored... I suppose it would be like building a 1:1 replica with few original parts...

My Information concerning the "Condor"
Wed Apr 4 07:44:16 2001

As far as I know :
In September 1999 I had a telephone conversation with Mr. Büker of Daimler-Chrysler Aerospace, Bremen works.
He told me that all 4 engines went to BMW aero-engines in Berlin-Dalhewitz;
The cockpit-section has to be rebuild and a lot of repair work of the fuselage had to be done.
When crashing during the lifting-operation the wings become twisted and dented. But the damage was not as big they feared at the very first moment.....

But since September 1999 I had nor substantial additional information.

The statment that the damage was not as big as they thought looks rather optmistic to me !! Looking on the photos I mentioned earlier... Even the fuselage was split in two cut by the cables during lifting. Here in Brasil, at Museu Aeroespacial in Rio de Janeiro, a B-17 was "sliced" by a steel cable during lifting and since then, the Fortress is awaiting his restoration. Surely people in Germany has the money and personel to bring to life the Condor but the effort will be incredible. I hope they be sucessfull !!

I spoke with {rof Steinle at the Berlin Technische Museum a few weeks ago.

He even surprised me in mentioning that everything was now in place (or nearly) for the 'full' restoration of the Condor. Not only BMW doing the engine but other large manufacturers doing the fusealge/wings/systems etc.

I cannot remember who, but people like Airbus/MBB etc were all mentioned.

It was easier to farm out parts to different manufacturers than a complete whole aircraft going to one source. He was very hopeful of the outcome

Whether it has started yewt, I am not sure. Their newbuilding is now complete and shortly the Bf109 and Bf110 will be put on display.

Hallo.
This sounds like an important and ambitious restoration.
Just wandering if there are online pictures available of the recovered Condor?
Also perhaps, are there online pics of the FW190D recovered from Lake Schwerin? I have the 'GreenHearts book'

cheers
Martin.

FW-200 photos on the web ...

Well, since Flugzeug Classic did a large article about this plane, I presume the Condor can be viewed on their site. Enter www.geranova.de (http://www.geranova.de), choice Luftfahrt option on the left, latter Flugzeug Classic and at last the option Augsgabe Archive. There you can find the magazine´s covers and dowload it´s contents - os some articles - on PDF format - Acrobat Reader. I´m not sure in which number they pictured the rescue, I guess on 5 or 6 /2000 issue...

the Geranova site do not shows the contents of each magazine. I downloaded here in my job the Acrobat Reader and could open the archives. They shows only the contents page from each magazine. I have the magazine in home. Interested in a scan from the article??

Champlin's FW-190D-13. Although Doug Champlin's Fighter Aircraft Museum has
been sold and will soon be moving to the Seattle Museum of Flight
(PF, Feb. '00), one of his 34 aircraft will remain behind at Falcon
Field in Mesa, Ariz. Excluded from the sale was the plane warbird fans
consider the crown jewel of Champlin's collection: the Focke-Wulf
FW-190D-13 (s/n 836017). Though the "Dora" is not flyable, its 12-
cylinder, 1,600-hp Junkers Jumo 213A engine is run occasionally. The
plane was one of five FW-190Ds shipped to the U.S. from France aboard
the HMS;Reaper in July 1945 for technical evaluation at Wright Field,
Ohio. In 1946, it was acquired by the Georgia Institute of Technology
in Atlanta, Ga., where it served as an instructional airframe until 1968.
From 1968 to '71, it was displayed in relatively derelict condition at a
museum in Santa Barbara, Calif. Champlin rescued it in 1972, registered
it as N190D and shipped it to [Unable to display image]Germany to be
restored. It remained in Germany until '79, then was returned to
Champlin's original museum in Enid, Okla. for final assembly. When
Champlin moved to Arizona, the 190D-13 went with him. According to the
Fighter Aircraft Museum's Bill Rummer, Champlin has been collecting
FW-190D parts for the past 20 years and wants to use them to upgrade
his Dora. He plans to replace several components fabricated new during
the first restoration with original items. The only other fully intact
Dora is the FW-190D-9 (s/n 601088) on display at the U.S. Air Force Museum
in Dayton, Ohio. It was shipped to the U.S. with Champlin's plane in 1945.
Another D-9 was recovered from Lake Schwerin in the former East Germany a
decade ago. It is being restored for static display at a Luftwaffe Museum
near Hamburg, Germany.

Regarding the last mentioned Fw 190 for display in a Luftwaffe Museum near
Hamburg:

This museum is runned by the German Airforce and it moved some years ago to
Berlin and is named Luftwaffen Museum Berlin.

Bruce,

One important thing you left out is that the D-9 the Air Force museum
has actually is fitted with the D-13 wings and the D-13 is fitted with
the D-9 wings. This mess up occurred sometime before the D-13 was sent
to Alabama. Doug Champlin is trying once more to get the museum to swap
wings so each aircraft is equipped correctly but so far this has not been
done.

Thomas Genth's aviation page site is a combination homage to Thomas's grandfather and father, both of whom served in the Luftwaffe, and a survivor's photo album. The website address is:

http://members.aol.com/tgenth/index.html

The above gets you to Thomas's The Page, in which he gives a history of the services of his grandfather and father. Thomas's grandfather, Adolf Genth, served in both WW I and WW II. He held the following positions in WW II:

Staffelkapitaen II. Kampfgeschwader 153 in Finsterwalde
Member of the Generalstab
Chief of the IV. Flieger-Korps

His father, Karl Georg Genth, served in the Luftwaffe from 1944 to 1945 - his age at that time 20 years. He served in III JG26 (squadron).

Further down The Page you come to his family photo albums covering WW I, WW II, and post WW II. I'm not sure all are family related, but they are very nice photos, indeed, and each can be enlarged.
