Richard -
BA-ZNS is Bundesarchiv-Zentralnachweissstelle and it's one and the same as BA-Aachen, BA-Kornelimünster and BA-ZNS Kornelimünster bei Aachen.
BA-ZNS has a relationship with WASt, but one of the German users of this Board would be better able to outline this relationship than me. It's kind of complicated. Basically, the German authorities prefer that inquiries be first directed to WASt rather than BA-ZNS. It's sort of the first stop before contacting other agencies.
The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräber-Fürsorge (German War Graves Commission) is strictly concerned with military cemeteries and has little connection to the other two, if any.
The Krankenbuchlager (Medical Records Repository) in Berlin holds all World War II German medical records. If a Luftwaffe flier was shot down, injured and hospitalized, for example, the medical records are here. These records also give details on his unit, circumstances leading to the wounds and other information of interest.

If the Krankenbuchlager in Berlin holds all WW2 German medical records would they also have the medical records of a US pilot shot down, injured and hospitalized in German hospital. The hospital was torn down in the 1970s. I am familiar with the WASt request for proof of relationship -which in this case I have.

Anne subsequently wrote to me for help. I, in turn, wrote to Larry, who kindly provided this response to Anne's query and who gave me permission to reproduce it here:
"Dear Ms. Hobbs,
Richard Eger asked me to contact you regarding the above.
My knowledge of this facility is limited to its frequent use during the 'eighties and 'nineties by Office of Special Investigations prosecutors and historians, Criminal Division, U.S. Justice Department. In the course of their case work they often had cause to make inquiries with the Krankenbuchlager regarding the identity and medical history of individuals under investigation or of potential witnesses in on-going cases. It was my understanding at the time that these inquiries were all processed through WASt in Berlin and that the Krankenbuchlager was not authorized under German law to handle inquiries directly. Unless you have already done so, you can find the WASt website URL in the LWAG listings and I believe this will provide instructions on how to contact them.
As far as I know, if your U.S. pilot brother was treated in a German hospital, either military or civilian, those records would be on file at the Krankenbuchlager, wherever that may now be located. The German pilot's medical records, if any, would also be located there. The German pilot's military personnel records (non-medical) would be at the Bundesarchiv-Zentralnachweissstelle (BA-ZNS) in Kornelimünster bei Aachen.
I hope this helps,
Sincerely,
Larry deZeng

Thank you Larry.
Regards,
Richard

Looking for any suggestions on how to locate records from Magdeburg, Germany hospitals for the time period 5 Aug. 1944 thru 10 Aug. 1944. Also any way to locate flak battery sites around Magdeburg on 5 Aug 1944...particularly
around the Daimler-Benze tank factory. Thank you in advance!

Here are some additional tips:
(1) All WW II German military and civilian hospital/medical records are maintained by the Krankenbuchlager in Berlin, but you must go through WASt in Berlin to access them. There will be a charge for each record they have to look up and you must prove to them that you are either a relative or the person whose records you seek is dead.
(2) Your best bet on the Flak records would be to contact the Stadtarchiver (city archivist) of Magdeburg. They will have records and probably a history of the city during the war. The alternative is to go to BA-MA in Freiburg im Breisgau and look in Signatur (record group) RL 40/Kart. There you will find Flakkarten (Flak maps) for summer 1944 that should show the location of each and every Flakabteilung and Flakbatterie deployed in and around Magdeburg.
