Question on Claim list meaning
Thu Nov 9 17:30:34 2000
In Tony Wood's claims file (http://www.ww2.dk/misc/claims.pdf) , an entry is listed for 25.02.44, as follows:
Maj. Heinz Bar 6./JG 1 B-17 HSS 05 Ost S/US-1/5, Heilbronn, 5.000m 14.45 190 - yes
What is meant by 05 Ost S/US-1/5, Heilbronn, 5.000m?
Is this a location?
Thanks,
Bob Korkuc

05 Ost S/US-1/5 -- map co-ordinates
What exactly does it mean though?
O5 Ost S - 5 Degrees South?
Can you offer more as how to interpret this particular map coordinates?

see Andreas Brekken's article on his, "Eagles Over Norway" site - this clearly explains the LW map system.
5 Ost S is split into 100 boxes, running west to east and north to south. These were designated with letters from AA through to UU (with the letter I not being used). These
boxes were further subdivided, hence the reference to 1-5.
I hope that the map below illustrates the point:
