I am researching a German air attack on the Allied Convoy UGS-18. The convoy was attacked on 4 October 1943 off Cape Tenes in the Med. The convoy was defended possibly by Free French fighters from No. III/6 Squardron. The German aircraft were possibly from II Fliegerkorps: Do 217's, HE 111's and maybe JU-88's from III/KG 100, I/KG 26 and III/KG 26. The Germans used the Hs 293 as well as bombs and torpedos. One freighter was lost, two seriously damaged and at least two more slightly damaged. At least two German aircraft were shot down, with two German flyers picked up by a British escort.
1. I am trying to positively identify the German and French units.
2. I would like to locate and obtain any operational records pertaining to this action. Aircrew names, reports, etc.
I have no idea where to look. Although I know NARA in the US, I do not have any sense of what records are available outside of the country.
ANY help or suggestions would be appreciated.
