Does anyone know the location of this base in North Africa?

This was a Luftwaffe base in October 1942. A town of this name is located in Egypt east of Cairo, but I'm fairly sure the Luftwaffe would not have been there in Oct 42.

Thanks

Joe

According to Mattiello's Fliegerhorstkommandanturen und Flugplätze der deutschen Luftwaffe 1935-1935 Bir el Abd is in Egypt, 72 km South East of Fuka.

When I posted Bir el Abd on my Africa map, I noticed that this placed the airfield south of the Quatarra Depression. Were their Axis forces deployed south of this feature?

Dear Col.,

It was a pleasure for me to be able to help you, but North Africa is out of my area.
Crete ok, it has my interest but North Africa is not my cup of soup. What I can do is sending you some websites were you can find information about "das deutsche Afrika Korps(DAK)".

Jaap

What Luftwaffe units were there?

Thanks again. This seems to position the airfield more centrally in the Axis occupied area.

I have ordered the book on Luftwaffe airfields from Osnabruck. when I complete my airfield list I will post it.
