Dear Manfred,

There may be information that supplements Andreas's at www.lwag.org. (http://www.lwag.org.) Look under the forum "Airfields & Mapping". Also, there is a great topic on the
"References and Reference Material" forum showing a terrific piece of research done by Rod Mackenzie utilizing a map. The topic title is: "R.A.F. Bomber Command
losses and Nachtjägd Abslusse claims for 16th/17th March 1945". Rod gives background information as to the resources he used to create his superb map detailing a
single R.A.F. bombing run.

Luftwaffe Pl.Q. system for Cuban and Crimea in 1943
Sat May 26 13:00:16 2001

Hi everybody!
In several documents related to 15./JG 52 I found designations of the place of downing of plane as Pl.Q. (beeing-Platz Quadrant?). Does anyone have a map of Cuban and Crimea area with such grid desigantion marked on map? Thank you and best regards,

Marko Jeras

That's Planquadrat (Pl.Qu.) and usually based on the Deutschen Heereskarte, Flieger-Ausgabe 1 : 300,000 scale (1 cm = 3 km).
Many of us have been looking for a set of these that cover the former USSR and eastern European area for many years. I've even gone to the Maps Division of the U.S. Library of Congress and to the Cartographic Branch of the U.S. National Archives and looked through their holdings, but with little luck. They have a few scattered sheets that were captured during the war, but no complete sets of this edition. The few sheets that they do have are for areas other than Russia.
If you are able to locate a full set of these in a library or archive somewhere, please share the information as to
where you found them.
Good luck!
(Larry)

Anders,

There is a usable map (just)entitled:

NachtjagdnavigationsKarte

printed in the back of Night Fighters- Hunters of the Reich by David P Williams, Tempus 2001 ISBN 0752420275.

If anybody has a source for a large scale version I am in the market.

Simon

I have the excellent book "Bloody Biscay" (First and second Edition).
However, doing research on Luftwaffe aircraft downed around the Iberian peninsula I am not able to translate the Luftwaffe grid coordinates given in the book to Greenwich latitude and longitude.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks in advance

Anders:

Reading carefully through your interesting document, I noticed that you mention that by the end of April 1943 the system was changed to another called Jagdtrapeze.
I have another book "U-Boat versus aircraft " author Norman Franks, where another system is used- with quadrants referenced by two letters : for instance the zone west of the Portuguese coast is covered by a square with the letters CG and the Mediterranean Sea by three squares - CH,CJ and CN. Do you know if this corresponds to the second system ?

Luis-you would need to have a Planquadrat map; I have one for Brittany northwards but had to make on of the Bay of Biscay myself so an accurate lat and long is hard to achieve. However, I can help if I can and thanks for the nice comments about my book!

...as part of a general upgrading of the JG 26 site, http://jg26.cjb.net . Les is still working on it, but the drafts look great. Unfortunately, I don't think it extends as far west as the Bay of Biscay. Oh, well....
