This is the new home for all of Tony Wood's wonderful claims lists. While the site currently has no loss lists, that is an eventual goal. The site address is:

http://tonywood.cjb.net/

Tony's site has 3 major sections. The first 2 consist of documents or lists downloadable in Word 97 format, with .pdf available upon request. The third is a discussion forum.

Discussion Forum

The password for the forum is luftdata. The forum is obviously just starting and the need for a password, in this case, is a distinct hindrance. I've written to Tony and it is pretty clear that he wants the password generally known.

On the same page is the following notation:

"Luftwaffe Claim & Loss Data Files - A list of the latest Luftwaffe Data files as compiled by Tony Wood". This is followed with the link "Forum powered by Bravenet.com".

Rather than leading to the named claim and loss lists, this appears to be a solicitation for membership in Bravenet. I asked Tony about this and this apparently is a solicitation for membership in Bravenet, rather than a link to additional data.

<U>Background on new site</U>

In writing to Tony, I obtained some background details on this new site from Tony in an email of 07 July 2002, which I'll quote or paraphrase here.

The data lists started out on Michael Holm's site, with which most of us are familiar. Tony had contacted Mike in 1998 as to whether he would be willing to carry Tony's lists on his site, which he was. In time, however, alterations were made to the lists, still under Tony's name, which was frustrating to Tony.

"In the meantime I obtained the new BA-MA Films which transformed the entire idea of forming a data bank of Claims. A bull in a china-shop. I started this around January last year, splitting the format into three Theatres - Reich und West, Sudfront and Ostfront. The work on this is going well, and I rely heavily on nice guys giving me corrections, ideas, and requesting amendments. So the idea is that Issue One will be full of errors, and Issue Two will remedy many of these errors, Issue Three will be ...etc."

While this was going on, Mike was away in Japan for 18 months. So...

"In the meantime through Don Caldwell I get Les Butler to very kindly give me space in his web-site cjb=cjbutler so http://tonywood.cjb.net with "luftdata" as the forum pass-word.

And so I have started. I try to put all in a good format. But the goal posts change, and I am now polishing up a considerable bank of Claims fit for this site. It all takes time. So ...

1. Please say anything you wish about the site.

2. I cannot do Acrobat stuff, so Les says on the site that he can provide facilities to upgrade Word 97 to .pdf format for Acrobat reader. This he is willing to do.

3. He chastises me for not advertising the site. But in all honesty this I know not how to do this. On the Internet if you wish to find out about "Horse-Racing" you search "Horse-Racing".

4. He questions that the documents should be a Master Documents, whatever that means, so that people who down-load will be unable to access it. What do you think? This will stop people making lists and corrections until the next Issue. Believe me I am no

Apparently Tony's site has an alternative address:

http://www.luftboard.ndo.co.uk/documents.htm

It looks like both are working as of this writing.

While researching Lw operations over the Normandy I've found (not a big surprise) that their claims and losses are somewhat inaccurate. I presume it's mostly due to the fact, they're based on WASt returns or RLM lists. The big question is, anybody have any idea how to verify the already published data?

I am also wondering if there is a "July-Dec 44" or "Jan-?45" list?

You can keep up with Tony's postings at http://www.luftboard.ndo.co.uk/tonywood.htm. He has produced a list for late 1944, but it's not posted on the site, meaning that he's not happy with it and hasn't had Les Butler put it up. My guess is he's working on a complete rewrite of the earlier version, as he did with Jan-Jun 44.

There will never be a list of 1945 claims from the OKL Chef für Ausz. und Dizsiplin Luftwaffen-Personalamt posted on-line, because such a list does not exist. According to all data I've seen, The claims confirmation system broke down completely at around the end of Jan 1945 (possibly due to the devastating 8AF raid on 3 Feb.) The ledgers had (fortuitously) been microfilmed in late Dec 44, but the films contain no claims submitted in January.

HTH and Horrido!

Hi,

I have the impression that these lists don't include all the Jagdwaffe claims.
for example, 8./JG2's Beaufighter claims in 1942-43, JG4's 1944 claims in Italy..
So it is possible that these lists fully cover only some units and not all JGs?
Any opinion?

The absence of a claim from Tony's list...
Mon Jan 27 19:09:59 2003
204.136.184.34

...does not mean that it was not filed, only that it does not appear in the microfilm that has survived, or in any of the several supplemental sources he has used and carefully noted. The RLM clerks recorded the claims in the main ledger in the order in which they came in, unsorted by unit or time of claim, so no units are systematically excluded. There's no way to tell what is missing (or totally illegible), of course. Some missing claims (from January 1944, for example) can only be explained as having been recorded on pages in the main claims ledger that were not microfilmed.

Many claims were rejected at the unit level and were never submitted to Berlin. This might have happened to the JG 2 and JG 4 claims you mention; they could also have been "lost in the post". Who knows? But anyone with knowledge (meaning documentation!) of submitted claims that are missing from his list should get this info to Tony.

Thanks a lot for your explanation.
I only think that some claims don't appear in these lists, excellently provided by Tony W. and by my knowlegde these claims are from some specific units.

Does anyone know which unit was "3./Trapo 5" (previously transcribed as 3./Tropo 5)? Maybe some sort of reconnaissance unit?

Thank you, Jim, for bringing Tony's new updates to my attention. His work is just fantastic.

Unfortunately, it emphasizes even more clearly, how totally useless the ZGs were in homeland defence, or in most other jobs assigned them. I guess one could say that the 110 was a success because it became a much-used nightfighter. But, even that may have been a mixed blessing, because with the 110's availability, the development of better and more capable nightfighters slowed and sometimes stopped.

Tony, if you read this, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for the work you have done on this project and your willingness to share what must be an investment of many, many, many man hours. As a neophyte, armchair historian of the WWII European air conflict, your contribution has been of immeasureable value to me.

Thanks so much.
