One of the strengths of this site is its glossary and explanation of German abbreviations and ranks. This would be a good site to benchmark for when you run across that German word or abbreviation that you really want to know what it means. Also, basic explanations of unit structures and ranks provide a very nice ready reference.

The sections of the site are:

Jagdwaffe: Organization and Aircraft Identification Markings - This is a very nice write-up with color profiles. German terms are explained by quick access to a glossary.

Luftwaffe Scoring System and Awards System - Concise write-up, including glossary referencing of terms.

Luftwaffe Claims Confirmation Procedure - Again, good, concise write-up with glossary defined terms. Sample reports are presented.

Luftwaffe Unit Commander Rank - Unit or title are matched to the personal rank of its commander. Again, there is good referencing to the glossary. A comparison table of ranks between the Luftwaffe, RAF, and USAAF is given.

Luftwaffe Rank Equivalents - Same rank comparison table as above.

Luftwaffe Abbreviations - Table providing explanation in German of abbreviations. From explanations, one can go to glossary for English meanings.

Luftwaffe Ground Attack Radio Terminology - Terminology used by Schlachtflieger on the eastern front with the meanings defined.

Luftwaffe "Aces" - A straight-forward list in alphabetical order of aces and their victory totals.

Axis Powers: Allies of the Luftwaffe Aircraft Markings - Sample liveries of German aircraft in the services of Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Rumania, Slovakia, and Switzerland.

Tops and Firsts of the Luftwaffe - Sort of a short Guiness Book of Records for the Luftwaffe.

Luftwaffe Fighter Aces - Top Awards - Highest Award Winners - List of holders of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, along with their victory totals. This was Germany's highest military award.

Luftwaffe Fighter Aces - Top Awards - Second Award Winners - List of holders of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, and Swords, along with their victory totals. This was Germany's second highest military award

Erich Hartmann's Personal Data - Brief chronology of events in Hartmann's life.

A Relative Size Comparison Of The Major Air War Protagonists 1943-1945 - Scale length dimensioned side view black & white aircraft profiles.

German Propaganda Posters - This is a collection of color propaganda posters. Shown in postage stamp size, each image can be enlarged for greater detail.

Best of the Breed - Two versions of Airpower magazine article by American WW2 ace Colonel "Kit" Carson comparing the top German and American fighter types used during WW2. The article must be downloaded.

JG Icons for Windows - Downloadable information, presumably of JG aircraft emblems.

Caged Eagles: Captured Allied Aircraft Markings - Side view color profiles of captured U. S. manufactured aircraft in German liveries. These profiles also appear in the book "Strangers in a Strange Land", by Hans-Heiri Stapfer.

"Requiem for a Heavyweight: A Combat/Test Profile of a Consolidated B-24 Liberator", by Lin Hendrix - This is the text of an article which appeared in WINGS, February 1978, Vol. 8. No.1.

Richard

Although the quality of these color images varies, I thought others might find them interesting.

The Rumanian Bf 109G profile is totally bogus.
The Hungarian, Bulgarian and Slovak profiles are not accurate either.
And I am not even opening the controversial topic of colour schemes, topic I try to avoid as much as the devil avoids holy water.

That's one of the backdraws of the Internet - as I see it. Almost anyone can post something on the 'net, no matter if the information is accurate or not. Then, it has a potential to become legitimate 'source' for modellers or even for some historians. I often see comments, like: 'I read it on the internet, therefore it proves my point'.

An error repeated many times can easily became 'truth'. This, in turn, can make the already incomplete general picture - in our case the history of the Luftwaffe - even murkier.

Wise words indeed, I have received some long awaited information on another forum from a very eminent person and in my excitment and relief accepted it. Then I realised it wasn't sourced! Whats the point of giving information if you don't give references? Ah well, back to the drawing board.
