What information is there on Rall's "BK+YS/Black 3" 109G-4? Did he use it in combat at all?

14./JG77 & Lt Hans Muhlkuch MIA 23.08.41
Wed Jun 13 14:03:16 2001

Hi all

Trying to find out a bit more on this unit.

When did it change from 5./JG77 (beleive 13./JG77 came from 4./JG77 and 6.(Z)/JG77 from 1.(Z)/JG77)

Why did it have red numbers and would the aircraft have carried the horizontal bar or the previous II Gruppe?

Has anyone seen or heard about yellow tips to the underside and / or top of the elevators tips (not wings) as part of the Russian theatre markings? Have heard about this on one Bf109 of 14./JG77 but would like to hear more?

Also has anyone more information on Lt Hans Muhlkuch who was killed in Bf108 E W.Nr1118 'Red 5' of 14./JG77. Does anyone have info on loss, date of birth and home town etc.

Any help on these subjects would be very much appriciated.

regards

MS

Oblt Werner Machold Crash
Wed Jun 20 04:48:21 2001

On 09.0641 Oblt. Werner Machold of III/JG.2 was shot down by HMS Blencathra whilst on a tip and run raid on the Dorset coast. His engine seized and he was forced to belly land near the village of Worth Matravers on the Isle of Purbeck and was made prisoner. The information that I have states that he was flying a Bf-109 E7 "white 15" does anyone have confirmation that this is the case? Even better has anyone got a photograph of the crashed aircraft?

Vernon

JG2 loses at Dieppe 19/8/1942
Mon Jun 25 20:36:28 2001

I am researching the pilots lost by JG2 at Dieppe on 19/8/1942 I am ideally looking at the two pilots of 6/JG2 who where lost on this day, Franz Sommer and Gunther Geguns. Does anyone know if there are any photographs of these two pilots anywhere. I have searched the book by Holger Nauroth and the recent Osprey books to no avail. I am also trying to find out any info about there losses. What time where they shot down by who etc. Any info would be very gratefully received.

Does anyone know any details about the loss of Uffz. Heinrich Tammen, pilot with II./JG 52, who became POW on 30.11.1944 (WNr., Staffel, cause, location....?). I remember reading somewhere that he had about 20 kills, but failed to find him in any Luftwaffe ace list. I will highly appreciate any help.

The only source available, of which I'm aware, that lists JG 52 aces are the Niko Fast books. Tammen is not amongst them, but it wouldn't surprise me that there are as of yet, a number of undocumented aces from that unit. Another name I've heard mentioned is Shelker, though I can find no record of him.

Schelker
Fri Jul 13 14:10:25 2001

Jim, many thanks for your help - as for Schelker, here is what I found on Schelker on http://airartnw.com/eagles@dawn.htm (I realise, this is no official source, moreover I did not find any mention of Schelker in Ader´s JG 51 book).

Unteroffizier FRIEDRICH SCHELKER
Joinimg the Luftwaffe in the autumn of 1940, Friedrich Schelker was posted to l./JG-52 at Dnepropetrowsk a year later, flying the MelO9F. Later when serving with 7./JG-51 rn the southern sector of Mariupol he was shot down and badly wounded. After hospitalisation, in 1943 he transferred to fly the Fieseler Fi.156 Storch. Friedrich sened throughout the Eastern Front, in Russia, Rumania and Hungary. He scored 22 victories and was awarded the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class.

Other possible ace from JG 52 could be Fw. Ernst Lohberg - if I remember properly he is mentiond in Fast´s work to have scored 4 kills on 5.7.1943 alone (and there is certain Lohberg with 18 kills mentioned in the ace list of Mr. Magnus - it would be definitely interesting to know his source) and was lost as Edmund Rossmann´s wingman couple of days later.

Since Al and I have worked pretty closely on our respective lists, my guess would be that he got Lohberg's name from Constable and Toliver. There are several names listed therein that I've left off of my list because of lack of documentation. Al had asked me about Shelker -- there is no record of him being WIA in the GenQuAbt 6 reports or a privately published JG 51 list I have, not to mention Niko Fast. Hmm, the plot thickens.

Since there appears to be no record of his being WIA in the GenQuAbt. 6 reports, not a particularly unusual circumstance, can you provide any details on when this happened, or of his aircraft? Seeing as how he was with JG 51 at the time, the machine has to be a Bf 109F-2 or Fw 190A-2/3.

It may seem strange that a high-scoring unit such as JG 51 was flying the F-2 this late, but it's true.

Schelker with JG 51?
Mon Jul 16 10:44:43 2001

In my opinion can be a remark of JG 51 simply a typing mistake (and we should then read it as 7./JG 52) - the "southern sector of Mariupol" seems to be too far from operational area of Mölders Gerschwader.
