Please help me on Bf 109F-4 W.Nr.8295 loss data...
Fri May 17 07:51:16 2002
195.29.134.157
According to data I have, on 20 November 1941 Lt.Baumgarten died in Bf 109F-4, but Gen.Quar.loss list does not mention W.Nr. of this plane. I received info that it was 8295, but what is the source of that data? If it is loss list of later date, can you please give me the date of that list?
Thank you for help and I hope somebody can help me (RA, what say you?).
Best regards,
Marko

The loss indeed is listed in the QMG reports as well as Fast's works. It is listed however as a 60% damage on landing due to enemy action.

Hi
I have a listing for the injury on a Ofw W Schweikert of the 05.10.40. I beleive he crash landed.
Could someone confirm his unit. He belonged to 4./JG51 in June 1941. Was it 4./JG51 in October 1940?
Thanks

That is the only listing I have although I am now in contact with the family. He had 10 'notlandungs' between 1935 and 45. I was trying to find out his unit (have yet to get back to the family) for 1940 and hope it might be JG51.
Looks as though he was IV/JG51 in July 1941. (or 4./JG51?. Was there a IV Gruppe by this time?)

On these dates I have...

and on 8.12 a II./JG 77 machine. Since the pilot was not injured in any of these, no name was given. It would be neat to be able to put a name with any of them. As to the April 1940 incident - I haven't been entering incidents if I didn't have at least a WNr. or name -- guess I should reconsider that 'rule'.

Genst.Gen.Qu.6.Abt.(IC) list dated 28.11.1942., lists reported 65% damage of Bf 109G-1 W.Nr.77641 of Erprob.St.d.Lw.Rechlin that had Fahrwerkschaden bei Landung at Larz on 27.11.1942.
Is this 'valid' Werk Nummer or mistake? Is there other such W.Nr.s in G-1 and G-2 production?

Hallo,
The Heinz Nowarra book on the FW 200 Condor records that C-2 F8 + DK, Werknummer 0024 had a crash on 27 April 1942 at Orleans with III./KG 40.
However the QM General Loss Returns state it was lost on 22 October 1940 with I./KG 40, somewhere off Ireland. The bodies of two of the crew were washed ashore and buried in Ireland.
Can anyone please tell me which version of it's fate is correct ?

Your help is much appreciated.
Jim I seem to have the two books you refer to if Mason is BATTLE OVER BRITAIN (1990 edition). However the page reference, 455, does not appear to fit. What have I missed ?
Just my opinion but DK seems more likely to me. Would 'O' be a rather high letter to use in a 1940 bomber Staffel ?
Thanks again and regards.

Hello Martin,
The book by Mason which Jim P refers to is the 1969 edition, but on the question of Werke nrs. can somebody confirm the Wnr for the FW200 F8+KH which landed two months earlier (20 Aug. 1940) in Ireland and is usually referred to as 0015. Keep up the nit picking it is one of the ways to sort problems!

Gun Camera film, identities of Lufwaffe A/C help!
Sun Jul 7 17:58:12 2002
195.92.67.65
Hello everybody
I have been researching RAF Gun Camera films,Photos & the Luftwaffe loss returns held at the IWM London.I have been unable to find matching Luftwaffe losses for the following:
24-5-40
F/L Malan 74sqn claimed a Do17 E of Calais.
Film shows a Bf110 being hit & bits coming off, then the same or another Bf110 with a Spitfire on its tail. The Spitfire pulls up & the 110 crashes into the ground.
27-5-40
F/O Freeborn 74sqn claimed a Me109 5m from Dunkirk.
Film shows a Bf109 hit in the R/H wing & a lot of smoke comes from the wing.
17-8-43
F/L Gaze 129sqn claimed a Fw190 W of Antwerp.
Film shows a Fw190 hit in R/H wing & part of the wing comes off (aileron?)& a lot of smoke.
21-8-43
F/O Stover 414sqn claimed a Ju88 Enghien/Moisselles A/D?
Film shows hits round fuselage & bits flying off.
10-9-43
F/O Carlson 400sqn claimed a Ju52 St Germain sur Morin.
Poor film but does show hits on R/H side of fuselage & inner wing root with lots of smoke.
23-1-44
Lt Col Birksted North Weald wing claimed a Fw190 Breteuil.
Photo shows Fw190 being hit in the fuselage & the belly tank explodes.Photo caption says "a Norwegian pilot D.F.C. leader of a Spitfire squadron claimed a Fw190 over Northern France".I know this is not a lot to go on but I am sure this is the pilot & date.I have gone through the combat reports at the PRO & this CR fits.He was leading 332sqn.
9-4-45
S/L Mackie 80sqn two Ar96's Fassburg A/F.
Film shows hits all over A/C & then bursts into flames.
2-5-45
S/L Sheddon 486sqn U/I F/B Heiligenhafen.
Shows a Bv138 hit lots of times on R/H wing round the engine & also the L/H engine with lots of smoke.
I need info on units, pilots, damage etc
I know this is a lot to ask for & that Luftwaffe records are not complete, especially the last two!
Thanks for any info
David

Ju 87 lost in Poland in 1939
Wed Jul 17 20:00:29 2002

Hello
Does anyone have any data on Lw losses in Poland on 4.09.1939? Four a/c were lost, one over Warsaw, one in Aleksandrow area and two in unknown location.
One of the crewmembers of a/c lost near Aleksandrow was Uffz. Wilhelm Berschneider from Munich. The ID plate found on the crash site stated 'serie 38701.23/4 Zeichn. 87.324 F.M. 1038'. The unit was possibly IV(St)/LG1 or StG2.

I'm awared of lack of loss return list for 4.09.1939, otherwise the loss returns for Polish campaign are not very detailed. The only listed loss for the day is the one of Do 18 of Olt. Muessing (killed). It seems however Luftwaffe lost about 20 a/c including about 4 Ju 87. One of them was lost in Warsaw (there's a photo of battered wreck) and another in Poczalkowo area, close to the Polish A/F (above data comes from Polish wartime documents). I suppose the latter was from StG 2. Interestingly apart of Me 109s (of I.(J)/LG 2 and Ju 87s, some twin engined a/c were claimed as Me 110 or Do 17. No idea about those.
Thanks
Franek
