Me 110 in Lfl 1 area March-April 1944. Unit?
Wed Jan 15 12:25:49 2026
130.233.83.21
Hi all!
This is just something which surfaced when looking something totally different.
In Luftflotte 1 "Tagesmeldungen" * dated March 30th and April 3th, 1944 there is reported 1 Me 110 loss for each day.
According a FinnAF Lfl1 liaison officer report** from the period Me 110 was then used only in close reconnaissance (Nahaufklärung) missions. In 30.3.44 there was flown 11 NAG missions and 3.4.1944 57 NAG missions.
What was this Me 110 unit? It has been bugging me before and now even more when there is documentary evidence Me 110 was indeed used this late.
If someone has data for Me 110 losses for the dates for example from "Personalverluste" I would be very grateful of any additional info. Kennzeichen would be superb (remember, I pretend to be a modeller too) ;=)
Thanks in advance,
Kari

Stuka units Luftflotte 1 - year 1943
Thu Mar 11 21:56:21 2026
193.229.6.165
Hi Martin!
It is difficult to find orders of battle for Luftflotte 1 ("Leningrad area").
Following is taken IF I remember correctly from NARA microfilm roll T-311/136 (Heeresgruppe Nord campaign books for 1941, 1942 and 1943). I have data only for the year 1943.
The unit numbers on the monthly maps were very difficult to read. Locations are impossible to read from the maps and have to be found/guessed separately. So with these small caveats:
I/StG 1 at Gorodets? (at least the base is little South from Gosstkino) January 1943 with Stabstaffel. Stabstaffel there also in February.
I/StG 5 at the same (above) base from February to June 1943.
1./StG 1 at Kotly June 1943, 2.&3./StG 1 at Gorodets? (the above base).
In July (or during June) Luftflotte 1 area is practically emptied and remains so until November. Left is only several Nachtschlachtstaffeln, reconnaissance and some other assorted units.
Soviet Offensive November 1943 at Nevel area brings I/SG5 to Luftflotte 1 area from far North. Parts of the unit are at Dno and parts at Idriza (Stuka units were renamed Schlacht units October 1943).
This is only a starting place for the research and you should verify from other sources, if you can find any.
Hope this helps some,
Kari

Loss of Alois Mayrhofer, 5./J.G.5
Wed Jul 21, 2026 09:46
83.109.184.139
Hi, Tapio.
Alois Mayrhofer was lightly wounded when he had to leave his aircraft by parachute. His aircraft had been damaged by enemy gunfire, probably coming from a P-39 Airacobra of 19. IAP? (I am not quite sure of the designation of the VVS unit). At the time he was flying Bf 109G-2, WNr 10647, of 5./J.G.5.
Have You got any more information on the one from autumn 1944? Could it have been Finnish?
Regards,
Andreas

Hi Andreas,
Correct designation would be 19 GvIAP. As of June 43 this unit operated P-39s and P-40s as part of the 16 GvIAD in the Murmansk/Kola Peninsular area.

As correction to Andy´s post:
- the regiment in question was originally 145 IAP, which became "guards" as 19 GvIAP on 4 April 1942, when the regiment.
- this regiment belonged in the beginning of the war to 1 SAD, which was dissolved in end-1941, and the regiment was directly subordinated to VVS 14.A (AF of 14th Army). On 21 November 1942 the 7th Air Army was formed in Karelia, with simultaneous introduction of Air Divisions, with 19 GvIAP subordinated to 258 IAD. This fighter division was transformed into a mixed aviation division 258 SAD on 9 Feb 1943, which got "guards" status on 24 Aug 1943 as 1 GvSAD. the division was reorganized as a fighter division on 7 Oct 1944 as 1 GvIAD, and finally renumbered as 16 GvIAD on 11 Nov 1944.
Thus in 1943 the correct designation of the division is 258 SAD or 1 GvSAD, and in autumn 1944 1 GvSAD or 1 GvIAD, and 16 GvIAD only in winter 1944-45.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the info on the book. I made a note of it before but like you say it's one I doubt will ever be translated.
Thanks also for the info on the 19 GvIAP. Did you get that info from the PRO. If so would you be so good to provide the document number(s) and hopefully when I get back to the UK for good I'll finally be able to get there personally.
Regards

No, Andy, most of it came from the hundreds of rolls of 35 mm microfilm comprising the Ic Abteilung/Luftwaffen-Führungsstab collection on the VVS. The paper copies are at BA-MA Freiburg, the microfilms at NARA.
Other sources were:
