Luftwaffe losses database...

HI all.

I am preparing new site called White Star vs. Black Cross. It will cover the air activity over Europe from the look of 8. and 15.AF agains Luftwaffe and their comrades.
Will cover years 1943 from June to May 1945.
Losses of USAAF, victories for USAAF and Luftwaffe would be attached for each day with small description...But I am missing 1945 claims for Luftwaffe and also need for these years 43-45 luftwaffe losses (in any form). If someone can share his info, please do so and contact me offline...
It would be of help to you all.

Thanks

Peter:)

Assembling data on Luftwaffe losses is a life's work for someone. Even where official data survive, there are inevitable inaccuracies which can only be corrected by years of patient research (including the excavation of wrecks). Some people have devoted decades to the Battle of Britain period alone.

The loss records for 1943 exist at the Bundesarchiv, Freiburg; those for 1944 and much of 1945 are lost. A great many people have contributed toward filling the gaps from a huge range of sources but that work is unlikely ever to be complete. You can find out more about this on the Luftwaffe Archives Group website at http://lwag.org/

Some of the discussions there might inspire you to do some research of your own - it's a fascinating activity.

Hi all,

I am searching for a list of Luftwaffe fighter losses in France during the summer of 1944 for the following dates:

22 April, 21 June, 24 June, 8 July, 8 August.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Losses in France

The Luftwaffe's aircraft loss records for 1944 have been missing since the war. The personnel casualty records have effectively closed to all but relatives of the airmen concerned by a German privacy law introduced in the early 1990s.

For dates from 6 June onward you will find much (but not all) of the information you seek in Jean-Bernard Frappé's "La Luftwaffe face au debarquement allié" (Editions Heimdal, France, 1999) however this will not necessarily cover aircraft losses where the pilot was not injured nor losses due to bombing/strafing etc.

In the Bundesarchiv at Freiburg (or in the Public Record Office, London in tranlsation) there are some records of Luftflotte 3 for the invasion period which include some figures for daily successes and losses.

These can be supplemented by reference to prisoner of war interrogation reports (held in the PRO and in America) by reports of monitored R/T traffic in the PRO and by reading through several thousand "Ultra" decrypts for the relevant period.

So there's no simple or final answer but the Frappé book is probably the best printed source you'll find.

Unknown (to me) LW units
Tue Nov 19 18:04:50 2026
132.167.34.116

In the LW loss list for April 1943 (BA-MA RL 2 III/1188), two LW units are mentioned that I have never heard about before. These are:

Ld.-Abt. 4 (Luftdienst-Abteilung?)
This Abteilung has lost a Junkers W 34 in the Brest area on 14 April.

Flugsicherungsschiff "Immelmann" (there is also a Flak unit designated Lei.Flugabw.Gr.Flugsicherungsschiff "Immelmann")
According to the operational context, it seems that this formation was operating armed trawlers (?) in the Brest area.

I would be very happy to learn a bit more about these two units and the part they played.

Best regards,

Philippe

Request: LW fighter losses 24th Dec. 1944

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

anyone able to give a hand to the following?

I have 10 air victories by US fighters for the date of 24th Dec. 1944, picked out of a book, but no sources available, which may list LW-losses in Germany for this date.

Not a funny X-Mas eve for the Göring boys, I believe...

Every detail, comment or hint is very appreciated.

Thanks in advance for helping out!

Kind regards

Norbert

There were at least 48 Bf 109s and 68 Fw 190s lost on this date. You might want to narrow your parameters a bit.

Hi Erich:

That's OK, if so, but here is a cut and paste from above:

"I have 10 air victories by US fighters for the date of 24th Dec. 1944, picked out of a book, but no sources available, which may list LW-losses in Germany for this date."

I interpreted that to mean 10 109s or 190s by US Fighters. ;))

Thanks John and Erich...

...and I have to admit, that I was inexact with My request – sorry for this. I know, that there had been a lot more than only 10 LW-losses.

For to clear up, what I am searching for:
German losses on that day in the area between "Vogelsberg" and Fulda. Hopefully this may shrink the research.

Thanks again for assisting.

Kind regards

Hi, John,

thanks for calling again and following up!

My old Girbig resource-book names different units and a/c's for that day – in total there are listed up a 106 losses; 85 pilots KIA/MIA and 21 WIA. Aircraft also are different of type – Bf 109 and Fw 190, named in different configuration of subtypes.

Units mentioned by Girbig: JG 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 11, 26, 27, 53, 54, 77 and 300; also SG 4.

I know that My request possibly means a long way to go...

Kind regards and thanks again

Would it be possible to determine if the "/AS" suffix was reported in the original papers or was instead added by the authors who worked on the material during the phase (1982-1997) in which most of us believed (erroneously) that there was a G-10 version marked as such?

Thanks for your time.

All the best

As Ferdinando mentioned in passing, all the answers to the question of losses on Christmas Eve 1944 (or at least the ones that made it onto a file) are in the file RL2 III/1171 at Bundesarchiv Freiburg. This covers fighter and night fighter losses from 24 December to 31 January 1944.

Dear Norbert,

I saw your request while going back through some old articles. Oberleutnant Klaus Bretschneider of 5/JG300 was lost on the 24/12/44 he was flying Fw190 A8 R8 No; 682204, he had 14 night kills and 17 day kills, he was killed when shot down in the Kassel area by Mustangs.

I hope this is of some help.

Cheers,

John.
