Dear friends,

At the beginning of Operation Steinbeck, "the Baby Blitz", at 21st January 1944, I./KG 76 was located in France. It's Gruppenkdr. is unknown. Even Holm gives no information about this unit in 1944. Who can help me in finding the name of this Gr.Kdr.?

Jaap -

Hptm. Helmut? Wahl, acting (Dec 43 - Jan 44)
Maj. Günther? Schulz (DKG) (Jan 44 - Jul 44)

The above is from P/W interrogations and other Allied intelligence sources, so I won't absolutely guarantee that they are correct.

Hello Larry,

Perhaps you ever came across interrogation reports from crews belonging to III.KG 3 or I.KG 53, operating He111's with V-1's against the British isles in 1944? I have some, kindly donated by a Dutch air war researcher but these give hardly any clue's to the identities of the Staffelkapitäne.
Maybe in the perpetual maze of your wealthy knowledge, such important details have hidden themselves?

Best wishes from Venlo, Marcel Hogenhuis

Hi, Marcel -

Thank you for the kind words. Unfortunately, I've never made a record of the Staffelkapitäne, only the Gruppenkommandeure and above. One needs to draw the line somewhere when trying to assemble organizational and operational details on the entire Luftwaffe. Besides, until 10 years ago or so when BA-ZNS started to become more cooperative with researchers, assembling the names of the thousands of Staffelkapitäne would have been an impossibility, especially from my side of the Atlantic.

Cheers,

Larry

I have found several people with my last name that served in the Heer. My university has the records of the Air Ministry but those do not include personnel records. Does anyone in there possession have the rolls of those who served in the Luftwaffe. The last name is Schauss. If you can help or offer any suggestions please do. Thanks and have a great day.

There was an Oblt. Jakob Schaus (one "s") who was a pilot in a Nachtjagdgeschwader and was awarded the DKG on 1 Jan 45. Other than that, your best shot is either WASt or the Bundesarchiv-Zentralnachweissstelle (BA-ZNS) in Kornelimünster bei Aachen. The latter has all of the old Luftwaffe personnel records and the former has access to them plus information on casualties.

Yes, the Oblt. Jakob Schaus (one "s"), flew with NJG 4 and was a Staffelkapitan, who had (23) aerial victories before he went missing in action on 2 February 1945. That's the only Schaus that I have in my listing.

How to Access Luftwaffe Archives?
Mon Feb 24 07:06:04 2003
208.187.14.176

Greetings,

We were perusing your website and were checking your Bomber section and noticed that you might want to add a new pilot.

His name is Hans Dochtermann and he was a major in the Luftwaffe. He served in many groups, on every front, from the Battle of Britain to the Mediterranean to the Eastern Front to the end of the European Theater of WWII...

He served from the beginning, with the Luftwaffe's original Condor Legion that was loaned to Franco for campaigns during the Spanish Civil War. From there he began a long road, to survive almost 2000 missions during the Reich's short lived reign.

He is responsible for the first CONFIRMED successful guided missile attack by plane. He did this as group leader of Gruppe II/KG40, stationed in Bordeaux-Merignac in November, 1943. The plane was a He 177-A5 equipped with the HS-293 "flying bomb". His plane made the strike on the F/V Rhona, which was attributed to the greatest naval loss of American life during WWII.

He also served as a test pilot during the war. He had the opportunity to test the Messerschmitt 262 and the Arado 234, among others test models.

We have more to tell about him, as we knew him well - he was a father and a grandfather in addition to being one of the greatest bomber pilots/test pilots that Goering had the good chance of securing. He was a kind man that did not seek oppression - he just wanted to fly, and fate solidified that he would.

We are searching for more information about him - We are seeking how to gain access to Luftwaffe archival information? We are looking anything that may pertain to the activities of the Kampgeschwaders that served during WWII, as we are seeking more specifics on Herr Dochtermann's activities during the long campaigns.

Any pertinent information would be most appreciated.

Best Regards,

KC Dochtermann

Hello Mr Dochtermann ,

if you need more information about Hans Dochtermann I would recommend the Bundesarchiv .
Bundesarchiv - Zentralnachweisstelle
Abteigarten 6
D 52076 Aachen
Tel.: +49 (0) 2408/147-0
For you are a relative , you will get the data . They will charge you about 15 - 20 Euro , about the same in $ . Price depends on the size of the file .
If you say 2000 missions , this would be , after Rudel , the second busiest pilot of the Luftwaffe . Can you send me any info ?

You could additionally try the German telephone directory - www.telefonbuch.de . It's worked for me on a few occasions.

If he was a commissioned officer, you might also get somewhere by trying the Bundesarchiv-Zentralnachweisstelle as they hold the personnel files. they will charge for a search. The address is - Abteigarten 6, 52076 Aachen.

G. Handrick downgraded ??
Sun Dec 28 11:05:37 2003
211.72.203.65

A strange matter caught my attention:

Handrick was replaced by Galland in JG26 by mid-40, in a process so called of "new breed" in the JGs by Goring.
Latter on he was designated to III/JG52. It looks strange, a famous character(Olympics, Spain,...), being given a Group, after being Geschwader Kommodore (??)

Any comments ??

Dario

Handrick really Kommodore or i.V.?
Tue Dec 30 01:06:05 2003

Hi!

My best guess regarding this matter is that Handrick was leading the JG 26 in Vertretung until a new Kommodore was in place. He then would move on to JG 52 and eventually lead the JG 5 as a Kommodore from mid 1942.

At the time Handrick was a Major, while Galland was an Oberstleutnant.

I have found that a lot of the published unit histories, not to mention internet sites, tend to put in people in functions that they were not really in, as the Luftwaffe had a lot of people functioning in the positions of Geschwaderkommodore, Gruppenkommandeur or Staffelkapitäne, sometimes for quite a long time until a proper replacement was at hand.

The problem has of course been that the sources has not been readily available.

If You are really interested in this matter, and Handrick's career especially, I would suggest the following course of action:

Request the 'Militärische Werdegang' of Gotthard Handrick from ZNS in Aachen

Check original 'Namentliche Verlustemeldungen', loss records, for Stab JG 26 in the period. The signature will tell You if Handrick was an appointed Kommodore or in Vertretung or an officer mdWdGA.

Combining these two sources, you will be able to draw a better conclusion.

Regards,
Andreas

The promotion and assignment dates below are taken directly from Luftwaffenpersonalamt documents at BA-ZNS Aachen as published in "Die Dienststellen, Kommandobehörden und Truppenteile der Luftwaffe 1935-1945" (Osnabrück: Biblio Verlag, 1999) by Christian Zweng and Klaus D. Patzwall's "Die Luftwaffen-Rangliste 1945" (Norderstedt: Militair-Verlag, 1986). So these would be the "official" dates. The "actual" dates of assuming command may differ, of course, but these are almost always difficult or impossible to nail down with any certainty in the absence of the unit's records or the individual's personal diary.

KAMP, Hans-Karl. (DKG). 00.42 Oblt., Staka 7./NJG 4 (to 01.09.43?). 01.04.43 promo to Hptm. 02.09.43 Hptm., appt Kdr. III./NJG 4 (to 06.12.44). 01.08.44 promo to Maj. 07.12.44 Maj., appt Kdr. III./JG 300 (to 31.12.44 KIA). (23 victories).
