Can anyone help?

Does the Bundes Archiv hold information on individual Allied POW's? Or were the records destroyed?

If records exist, can anyone tell me how I would go about getting details.

Thanks

Ian

For US airmen, I believe the original German records are at the US National Archives at College Park. I believe these are the original files for I know of an example recently where the dog tags of a crew member were in one of the envelopes (incidentally, he was still alive, until then I thought the tags were only removed when the crew member was killed).

Artie Bob is correct. German records of Allied POWs and otherwise are held by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Record Group should be discoverable by consulting the NARA worldwide web site. I believe it is RG 242, Captured German Records.

Ian,

You might find a few bits and pieces in AIR40 at the PRO. I've not viewed any actual files but there a number of promising titled ones.

As in Artie's mail thus it seems in the UK. Most German records(and, I believe, some Japanese ones) of British prisoners were brought back to the UK after the war. I actually have a photocopy of a relatives PoW record (in German obviously) obtained after Pension enquiries had been made to a Government dept.

I can not say any more than that, but hope it helps!

I have a listing of all RAF & Commonwealth POWs as at 1 Jan 45 but individual records cards were either destroyed or liberated by the POWs when they moved camps at the end of the war
