4(F)./122 Bases and Operations Aug to Dec 1941
Sat Dec 28 12:40:08 2002
80.2.186.26

I am currently attempting to trace to whereabouts, losses and operations, of 4(F)./122 during the period Aug to Dec 1941.

So far all I have, for this period is the following:-

Brodi
Winitza (Ukraine)

Neither are date specific but Brodi appears earlier.
This is from a copy of a document from the PRO (AIR24/1000 - MFIU/HQ/CSDIC/38 which contained a prisoner interogation report.)

In addition I do not have any losses recorded for this unit during the above period - which is strange as even if they were in training there would have been some losses incurred.

Can anyone help as I would like to nail this one down.

Thanks

Andy Mitchell

Andy -

First step is to straighten out the spelling:
"Brodi" is Brody/75 km SE of Luck in what was then southeastern Poland;
"Winitza" is Vinnitsa/200 km southwest of Kiev in western Ukraine. The Germans spelled this "Winniza", not "Winitza".
The above corrected spellings are in the English form rather than the German, Polish or Ukrainian forms as I believe this is what you want.

Larry

D.520s: yellow or not yellow?
Thu Jan 16 14:54:58 2003
81.49.195.177

It has often been said that the undersurfaces of the German D.520s were yellow (as well the tail).
I am not that sure of this.
1) most of them belonged to operational units (JG 101, 104, 107...) and to my knowledge operational units did not fly yellow aircraft.
2) many wore the ex-French camo scheme with a high dividing line (in line with the exhaust pipes), which means that the yellow colour would come up very high on the cowling.
3) the French put their hands on ex-Luftwaffe aircraft (or a/c earmarked for the Luftwaffe) in August 1944 and I have never read any report of yellow undersurfaces.
Any hint will be welcome.

D-520 shot down
Sun Jan 19 14:21:36 2003
195.92.67.66

Hi
All i have found is the following

266Sq on on a sweep 9th feb 44,
P/O Erasmus spotted what first looked like a 109, he attacked and the a/c caught fire and crashed s/e Chartres, the a/c was painted grey/green on the upersurfaces and yellow underneath with large black crosses on it's wings,
( It was claimed as a captured P-51 shot down )
Research shows it was a D-520 that was actually shot down.
I have details somewhere, I will try to find them if you wish.
Cheers
Jerry

The D.520 shot down was n°483 of JG 105 based at Chartres (Ufz Woll killed).
I didn't know Erasmus' report. Thanks for sharing this info.

Hi CJE
I have somewhere, a photocopy of the report, If you wish e-mail me direct and I will turn it out and scan it for you.
It is from the PRO, but if I make no profit there is no problem with me scanning a copy for your own use.
There are some harrowbeer wing gun camera pic's, but I can't recall which combats they are of, and they would naturally only be B/W pic's.

KG 200

But not "clandestine" as in dropping agents (and in the west they carried Luftwafe markings while doing that, too).

Günther W. Gellermann's book "Moskau ruft Heeresgruppe Mitte" is the best on KG 200 so far. I don't know how much the late Geoff Thomas's book will add. When we were corresponding, he was very busy with their use of the B-17. I contributed my research (as it then stood) on Sonderverband Einhorn.

From PRO AIR23/3479:

On 2 November 1944, two Ju 290s arrived in Skopje, Jugoslavia.

On 26 November a Ju 290 was in contact with Vienna from 0900-0920.

"German radio beacons on Crete, Rhodes and Kos were active during the night of the 27th/28th and there are indications that Ju 290s flew from Zagreb to Rhodes during the night."

29 November: one Ju 290 was in contact with Kaloz between 0427 and 0527.

On 30 November at Ju 290 flew from Vienna to Rhodes in the early morning and was back home at 2330hrs.

PRO AIR23/6791: "When at the end of January last [i.e. 1945] a JU-90 [sic] from Germany arrived on Rhodes with a load of mouth organs and song books, football bladders and drums to boost the morale of German troops, the comments of the majority of the troops were unprintable (Source: CSDIC ME Report M1624)"

It's correct that KG 200 had very few long range types. It seems that all its transport outstations operated as small Kommandos of 2-3 aircraft AFAIK: Kdo. Carmen in Italy; Olga in the West; Toska in the East; Kdo. Süd in Kalamaki, Greece are examples.

Ju 88s didn't have that kind of range! I guess you meant North Africa.

No. 600 Squadron was in Maison Blanche, Algeria at this time. Their records are all in the Public Record Office in London in file AIR27/2062.

I don't have data on their claims that early in the war (only from June 1944 onward) but the file will and also there a history of the Squadron "Gentlemen In Blue" by Hans Onderwater.

Andy,

There are a number of files in AIR 40 containing maps of German airfields. I can't remember exactly how many but they are to be found in the vicinity of AIR 40/1240. These make very interesting reading. Some but far from all of this material was reproduced in Ries' book 'Fliegerhorste'.

Depending on what you're looking for, you might well also come across something of interest in AIR 34, being the records of the Central Interpretation Unit.

Information can be found in the London Public Record Office in translated extracts of Luftflotte 3's diary for September 1944 and in the Ultra intercepts and in P/W interrogation reports on luftwaffe aircrew.

Also, RAF and USAAF combat reports will give you information about encounters with German aircraft.

Ulf Balke's "Der Luftkrieg in Europa, Band 2" mentions KG 2's participation in a raid on Eindoven and there are photos of the damage in After the Battle Publications' "Operation Market-Garden Then and Now"

Sorry no info on Italian A/F.

I knew his aircraft was "S", as the complete microfilmed records/day log of the Squadron (227 RAF sqn) were purchased from the PRO at Kew (can be ordered over the telephone). I passed this roll of microfilm onto a friend in Berlin so I don't have this anymore

Got the complete roll for 227 + another Squadron for total of £96.00. They charge per metre of film
They charge £0.40 per photocopy and each roll of microfilm had hundreds of pages

These have pilot reports for every mission and aircraft/crew taking part.
