Dear Members: I am still searching for a history of the Bindlach/Bayreuth Luftwaffe Base . When it was put into use and the Luftwaffe outfit that was stationed there. I know that it was captured by the US Army on April 15,1945 by the 71st Infantry Division and a number of buildings on it were burnt at that time. All the building except one were destroyed later by someone, I would like to know who did that also. Also I was told that the first Kommandant of the Luftwaffe was from Bayreuth(other than Goring)does anyone know if this is true and if so his name.
Thanks
Tom Costine

Hi!
Bayreuth-Bindlach seems to be a training centre. With litte looking in my notes I could find at least following units:
Stab & III/SG151
Flugzeugführerschule B1
Flugzeugführerschule C1
For more do search at Michael Holm's "The Luftwaffe, 1933-45" homepage at:
http://www.ww2.dk/index.htm
Click "Air Units". It will took a lot of time. This is how I did find those above. There's probably have been more units based there.
Hope this helps some,
Kari

Tom -
Over the course of its existence, there were hundreds of Luftwaffe units stationed at Bayreuth-Bindlach when you include all of the servicing, support, supply, administrative, guard, antiaircraft, etc., units. They came and went. The turnover was very large. Since a definitive list of these units does not exist, you will first need to specify the date or dates that you are interested in. Then, I suggest you do a google.com search for the website for Stadt Bayreuth, click on their e-mail or "contact us" link, and then ask the Stadtarchivar for help with your questions. It is possible that some local enthusiasts have written an unpublished history of Flugplatz Bindlach and the original or a copy may be on file with the Stadtarchivar. This is very often the case in Germany.
Good luck!
L.

Looking for information on the Luftwaffe base near Bindlach, Germany (aka Bindlach/Bayreuth) 1937-1945,
Gruppe II/Jagdgeschwader 6 (?), last known as part of Flugzeugführerschule B16, originally part of
Fliegerübungsstelle Roth-Kiliansdorf. Who would be willing to discuss this subject? I have photos from 1937 - 1945. Please respond, if you know of this airfield.

Hello Richard
Regarding Bindlach , at the very end of the war (probably on may 8th 1945 ) , somme elements of I.JG6 moved from 'Kummern ?' eastern front to Bindlach ( 2 FW190D9 were dicovered there WkNr 500636 , 211091 ) A third one was also found there damaged (JG4,JG2 or JG300) .
This is what I can say concerning this airfield .
All the best
Eric

Hello Eric, good to see that you are back. I will answer your e-mail asap. Both D-9's at Bindlach, 500636 and 211941 are believed to be JG 6 aircraft. Until today I did not see any documentary proof of it. However, everything seems to indicate that this is the case.
