Rudolf Hess's Bf-110D-?, what colors?
Sun Sep 16 20:12:12 2001

I'm looking for info on Rudolf Hess's Bf-110D, VJ+OQ that he flew to Britain in May of 1941.

First, what "D" version of the Bf-110 was this? Is it a D-3?

Second, what color scheme was it painted? I've seen a decal reference saying 74/75/76, but is this right? What about 71/02/65? Any ideas on this?

Thanks!

-Drew

Hello Ray!
For some interesting photos see this: http://isweb23.infoseek.co.jp/art/tobanai/photo-room.htm
Some drawings I saw in Polish publications for the Bf 110 and Bf 109.
My best regards, Standa

Standa's note sounded interesting, so I took a look at the site mentioned. While in Japanese, the photos are really oustanding. All are in color and, except for some miscellaneous engine parts at the end, all can be viewed in a crisp, large size. I have no idea what the name of the site is, nor who is the webmaster. Regardless, this is a treasure.

The toughie, since the site is in Japanese, was to identify where these aircraft and engines were. Thanks primarily to Mikael Olrog's Preserved Axis Aircraft site, I was able to do pretty well on the identifications. To make it easier for the reader, I'll present the information in a beginning to end manner as laid out on the site. This means hitting the major subject icons top row left to right, next row left to right, etc. Same with the thumbnail photos that each icon leads to.

The Virtual Aviation Museum website's strength is in its listing of aviation museums in Europe. While there is the occasional photo and minimal technical and historical detail, these are not the site's strenghts. The address of the site is:

http://www.luftfahrtmuseum.com/htmi/general/i.htm

Sections of Luftwaffe interest:

<U>Aircraft types</U>

Listed by name, designer, and category, a broad, but light depth coverage is made of much of the world's aircraft output.

<U>References</U>

Currently, there is only a listing of magazines worldwide. The intent is to add sections on famous aviators and a dictionary of aviation terms.

Mon Jan 14 03:33:36 2002

Tail section of Schnaufer's 110 was exhibited for quite a while in the Australian War Memorial, Canberra A.C.T. and had his kill markings painted on it, there is supposed to be one of his 110 tail sections in the I.W.M. London too, I don't know if this is the same one or not, there can't be too many in existance, the Aust Memorial is curently upgrading its exhibits, and as far as I know the tail section is still there, and curently in storage, hope this bit of info is of some interest,
Cheers

Schnaufer's Tail
Mon Jan 14 15:45:29 2002

(Peter) Hinchliffe's book (Schnaufer - Ace of Diamonds) discusses these artifacts. It seems that these were taken from a 110 that he flew during the last few days of the war, which was NOT the same aircraft in which he flew regularly. The fins and rudders on the last plane were painted to resemble the previous aircraft and are those on display in the IWM.

The actual tail (don't remember whether it was one or both) was discovered in a farmer's shed and was purchased by an unidentified "private colletor".

I have being reading " Black 6" the extraordinary restoration of a Messerschmitt Bf109, and written by Russ Snadden who worked for about 15 years on the plane to restore it and make it airworthy. The only way I know to contact Mister Snadden, is through his publisher, PSL

Sorry if I could not help you any further.

You might try writing to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford Cambridge as I understand Black 6 is being "repaired" there. Black 6 is due to enter the RAF Museum at Hendon, London sometime this year. Her flying days are sadly over.

can anyone clear up the mistery of those captured 109's in 1939/1940?

"White 1"/W.Nr 1304 of 1/JG76 captured 22/11/1939.Pilot was Feldwebel Karl Hier.Became AE479.repaired with tail unit of W.Nr1980(I now beleive it was the tail unit of W.Nr 1480).
Went to the USA aboard the SS Drannesford in April 42 together with "Black 5" W.Nr 6147 pilot was Unteroffizier Andreas Walburger who forcelanded on 15/9/1940 in Sussex.

"Red 9"/W.Nr 3326 of 2/JG51 captured 28/9/1939.Pilot was Unteroffizier Georg Pavenzinger.

"Red 14"/W.Nr of 2/JG51 captured 22/11/1939.Pilot was Feldwebel Herfried Kloimuller.According to French recordsit was thius a/c that Capitaine Rozanoff was flying on 28/11/1939 when the tail was cut off by escortin Hawk 75A flown by Lt. Baptizets.

"Black 12"/W.Nr 4101 of 2/JG51 captured/crash landed brought down by F/Lt.Christie of 66 Squadron on 27/11/1940 became DG200.Pilot was Leutnant Wolfgang Teumer.

"Yellow 11"/ W.Nr 1251 of 3/JG76 captured in December 1939. Pilot was Leutnant Heinz Schultz. This a/c was displayed in Paris

"White 6"/ W.Nr after capture wore French markings a/c had blue sides.

On 5th of June 1940 Werner Molders of JG51 came down in French territory in his presentation 109E-3 W.Nr (Blue sides) What of this a/c? Was this "White 6"?

All replies welcome.

I just received sad news (sad for us people here) that Yugoslav aeronautical museum has sold its uncomplete Ju 87B-2 to english byer for 50.000 USD (surely so). Plane is W.Nr. 0406 "VE+KU" and was captured in 1945. It was used in combat during closing stages of war by provisional partisan squadron. After the war it was used at Technical university in Belgrade for studying purposes. Museum took it over in mid fifties. Sold parts include fuselage with wing root, propeller and both legs, but not the engine. Single part that will remain here to remind us of it is its tail.

Hi all...

I'm seeking the current news/location of Robert Lamplough's former Spanish Bf109E C4E-88. After a spell at Tangmere (Military Aviation Museum, three miles east of Chichester, West Sussex, England), it was moved to the Newbury Aeroplane Company for possible restoration....

Does anybody have any further news on the project and can confirm its current location?

Any pointers greatly appreciated and thanks in advance,
