I am looking for background information about a man described in NARA records, I have, only as 'Lt Luchou'.

His Bf 109 made a forced-landing in the area of Heugon Verneusses, France(sometime after 2 Feb '42 but before Oct '44) and where, to his personal misfortune, the'resistance' first found and shot him.

After the liberation of the area, Lt Louchu's papers were handed over to Allied authorities by the resistance members invloved in this incident.

Can anyone provide any further information about this poor fellow?

Michael,

It may not be the same person (note different spelling of the name), but my records show a Leutnant Karl-Heinz Luchau, who flew with JG 54 and JG 11, had a total of (19) aerial victories, was a Staffelfuhrer and was shot down and killed on 7 June 1944 by P-47s. It doesn't say how he was killed.

I hope this helps.

As per Prien/Rodeike in vol2 of their JG 1/11 history:
Lüchau wurde nach dem Abschuss einer Thunderbolt selbst abgeschossen und kam beim Absturz seiner "gelben 20" in der Nähe von Caen zu Tode.

Hello Don,
Many thanks for yourtimely response and the source you have cited. I believe you have probably identified the fellow properly.

The original source of my own information on the matter, the Escape & Evasion records held at NARA in their MIS-X files, are notorious for the 'clerks' inaccuracy/creativity in the spellings of many sur-names.

The date of Lt Lucahu's FTR, D-Day plus one, is consistant with a period in which the resistance was particularly aggressive in their activities.

regards,
Michael

I'm very much interested in any details concerning Lt. Luchau's last sortie that may possibly lead to find the circumstances of his loss. Some German documents indicate Luchau was lost in the afternoon combat over Beauvais but Prien/Rodeike's JG1 & JG11 states that the loss actually occured in the morning in Caen area and suport that with some muddy accounts of pilots taking part in the sortie. Anyway I'm afraid it would never be possible to link any particular claims to any particular losses in the very this combat.

Hello Franek,
I can't tell you anything about the circumstances of the loss of his aircraft as my records give not date and only indicate how he met his end.
You can contact me directly if you want these details.
Regards,
Michael
