Günther Freiherr von Maltzahn survived the war and died in Düsseldorf on June 24, 1953, not 1943!

Aside from his leadership in JG 53, he also spent a period in 1944 as Jagdfliegerfuehrer Oberitalien (Controller of Fighters in Upper Italy) based in Verona.
There was another von Maltzahn who led a Panzerbrigade in a counter-attack against US troops defending "Hell's Highway" (the road to Arnhem) during Operation Market-Garden in September 1944. Anyone know if he was a relative of the pilot?

Herr Schulz is asking for assistance about Luftwaffe Airfield boundary signage...
"Hello, I am writing a book about Sandhofen Airfield. I have acquired the original 1941 construction drawings for the airfield and am looking for information about signage identified in the drawings which was located every 200 - 300 meters around the airfield perimeter. The signs consist of a chevron which could be an information or descriptive symbol. Does anyone know what this could mean. Thanks for any replies."

hello,
you could find an answer in the following book "WWII German Military Symbols & Abbreviations 1943-45" written by TERRY (or TERRENCE) BOOTH ; this bilingual dictionary English /German languages. 120 sheets.
I look for any information about the following French airfield "DINARD PLEURTUIT" located in Brittany westwards from SAINT MALO.
Have you any track?
TIA
(There is a second book available on the same subject:
"Dictionary of German Military Terms, Abbreviations and Map Symbols", by W. Victor Medeja.

Richard)

Dreipunktrandfeuerleuchten
Fri Jun 13 09:06:41 2003

Hello mr.Dirk Schulz,
In the Netherlands a group of air war historians is about to publish a large manuscript about the history of Dutch airfields during WW-2 (see www.airwar39-45.nl , then 'projects', then 'airfields').
The ^^^ marks are so called 'Dreipunktrandfeuerleuchten' (boundary marking lights). The flat area with the runways (in German 'Rollfeld') were marked with several groups of 3 red lights in a slight V formation, the point of the V pointing towards the landing area. Other (high) objects (like chimneys/zum Beispiel Schornstein) were marked with red lights too.
For further questions/für weitere Fragen, please contact me off board,
Best wishes, Marcel Hogenhuis

Hi,
I'm the airfield historian of Coleman Army Airfield, the former Fliegerhorst Sandhofen, Mannheim. I write a book on the history of the airfield and are looking for info on the Fire department ( Fliegerhorst-Feuerwehr. Did the Luftwaffe own their own Fire Dept? Are those listed anywhere? What kind of equipment did the use and have,? Does anyone have Pictures or books on the FLiegerhorst - Feuerwehr?
Any comment is appreciated!
Thanks

Hello Dirk,
There is a book about 'deutsche Löschfahrzeuge' in WW-2 from which I will make some copies. In this book some beautiful pictures of Luftwaffe vehicles are included so you will get an idea how they looked then. If there is info about the fire departments within the Luftwaffe, I will copy that info for you too. Please send me your postal address off board again, I am not sure if I have stored your address in my PC.
These copies will be sent with the pocket book 'Offenbach im Luftkrieg' that I found again last week in a moving box. Probably due to its small size and without knowing it, the booklet was still packed between a pile of pocket novels.
Best wishes, Marcel Hogenhuis
