The Wings on the Web website contains nearly 12,000 aircraft & missile photos. The majority of photos are of museum aircraft and missiles at NASM Garber and other museums in the USA, Germany, and the United Kingdom. There are many detail shots. The site addresss is:

Any He177 fragements anywhere...please?

Hi
Im trying to locate a few relic fragments of the He177 to complete a presentation for a local museum - we have examples of every Luftwaffe type that flew against Britain apart from the He177. We could afford a modest sum or would be happy to swap parts of other Luftwaffe types.
Thanks

This is probably the nearest we come a complete He177 today. Lays somewhere in Bodensee on 160 meters. (From Flugzeuge 3/99.) Hopefully someone has got the resources to get this priceless bird up :-)

Yeah, I hope that. I'm no expert in Aircraft Salvage, but the Trondheims Fjord contains more salt than avarage. Lifting a large plane, by its tail, which had been sitting on the seabed in 60 years, *ugh*!

I actually saw the salvage, which was broadcasted through tv, and seeing the Fw-200 fall down on that barge and got crushed. I just wanted to tear my hair off :-/

Tormod

surprised it has not been lifted. Would have thought one of the German museums would like it although I know the Berlin Technische Museum have enough to deal with at the moment.

160m is deep but I am sure it could be recovered as with the Halifax from Norway a few years ago (and now in Canada). Would be interesting to know the condition.

regards

Mark

PS Is it definately a He-177? The wing span seem to be to short? (Not knowing about ther sonar distortion?)

Hello Mark!

Probably the best way of getting more information on this special wreck, is by contacting Flugzeuge Magazine, since this picture was from third Edition, 1999.

PS: How is the progress on the Fw200 in Technische Museum?

regards,
Tormod

The page http://www.cyrnus.com/images/Luftwaffe/ is an index to some Luftwaffe images. The author of this webpage never identifies himself. Going to the home page neither provides a useful title, nor direction back to this page. The title of this specific page, actually an index, is Index of /images/Luftwaffe. Subjects presented are:

Me 262 crash in April 1945 at Brewitz / Salzwedel
Tue Apr 29 18:49:45 2003
62.202.24.154

Hi,

I am looking for information about a Me 262 which crashed in April 1945 (or perhaps February or March) at Brewitz / Salzwedel (North Germany). The pilot bailed out and survived. Eyewitnesses said that it was an Oberfeldwebel (Ofw) and that he shot down a USAAF bomber before he was shot down.

Is it possible to find out more about this Me 262 and its pilot with these information?

Roger

Try over at www.stormbirds.com - follow the links to their database of losses. It's searchable, try searching for the crash locations.

Brewitz is a small village and it might be that the in the loss list another larger village or town is mentioned. I used mapquest to locate Brewitz and the surrounding area. Zerbst is about 20-30 kilometers away. Perhaps the 262 came from this airfield.
I will receive some crash parts of this plane (part of the wing with the Balkenkreuz). It has a greenish camouflage (perhaps 82/83). According to the person who participated at the recovery, the information came from eyewitnesses. So, the only thing that is sure is the location of the crash parts. I am not so sure if they could recall the correct month of the crash.
The fact that the pilot apparently shot down a B-17 (or another USAAF bomber) before he was shot down should make it a bit more easy to identify the pilot.

Roger

Dan,
Thanks a lot for this info. I checked Classic Pub. Me 262 books and there was also just the information that it was lost close to Zerbst. But that would fit very well.
It states that they attacked US bomber formations first. Perhaps it is possible to find out if some bombers were shot down by jets? Or perhaps a gunner even claimed a jet kill?

...but a 30 min drive from here, in Sinsheim:

http://www.technik-museum.de/

Check under Sinsheim

They have many aircraft and helicopters on Display, from ULs to TU 144 and B747. Obviously also WW2 aircraft and equipment, like an FW 190, Ju 52 etc.

It has been several years since I've been there, but they keep adding to their collection regularly. Some displays were "pseudo-restored" (not very accurately), but others were really nice indeed.

. I haven't been there for many years, but I remember it iIt is worth it, though.
