Recoveries from German lakes

Hi all
After seeing the sonar scan of the He177 in the Müritzsee a few months back on TOCH, I was wondering what the procedure is on aircraft recoveries and why it had not been recovered. I understand the economic siutation with in Germany at the moment but cannot understand why say the Berlin Technische Museum went to Norway to recovery a large 'poor' condition project in the case of a 'Condor' (unless as it was FW and BMW - there was some tie in there), when an equally interesting and rare He177 was on their doorstep?
There is more aircraft within the lakes of the old East Germany and can't understand why more collectors have tried not to recover these aircraft from the lakes. Look what was recovered from the American lakes for instance!!
I've seen allied combat reports listing Fw190A's, Fw190D's, Seibel 204, Bf110', Ju88's all shot down or ditching within Germany lakes during the last months of 1945. There is probably also Allied and Soviet types as well!!
Just interested. Perhaps I should pack my diving suit and go diving during the summer to see what I can find.
regards
MS

Well the problem is money. Germany as state is nearly bankrupt and has a deep economical and financial crisis. In general all those planes are property of the Federal Republic of Germany as legal successor of the Third Reich and you need official permission to salvage any kind of military equipment from WW2 (but you won´t get it in most cases due to our strict laws on weapons in general) - problem they don´t have the money to save the stuff and so they prefer to leave it where it is instead of giving it to other groups/persons. The problem is that for example the Luftwaffenmuseum in Berlin Gatow as well as the Museum für Verkehr und Technik in Berlin have lost a large part of their official financial support due to the crisis and projects for salvaging planes are either cut short or have to be abandoned at all.

Hi Marc,
When it comes to choose between the Fw 200 and a He 177 I can understand that the Berlin Technische Museum went for the Fw 200. It had greater impact on the civil aviation than many other aircraft constructed at that time. It broke several records and would probably have affected the way people travelled unless the war came.
The He 177 was not really a creative design, unless the coupled engiens are taken in to account - and they wern't really succesfull. The He 177 didn't contribute so much to the war effort as other aircrft did. The Fw 200 did probably contribute more to the wareffort than the He 177?
The recovered Fw 200 will be restored as a civilian aircraft thus again focusing on its impact as a peacefull transport aircraft.
Of course, I as a luftwaffe buff, would love to see a He 177 recovered and restored! :-) But if I'd have to choose between the two I'd go for the Fw 200.
/Mikael
P.S. I've got a diving license so I'll be happy to join you this summer! *LOL* And I'd like to see a Ju 188 recovered or a Do 17/217

Mark et al
As you say there are bound to be several aircraft in the German lakes , I have heard of an intact Me110G and a Ju88 , there are also 'unconfirmed ' reports of a 262 , Ar234 and 163 in a lake near Rechlin . Schwerin gave up a 190D-9 and parts of another - and having a Luftwaffe base on its shores means there must be further aircraft in it.
There is a known complete Halifax [ most likely still bombed up though ;-0 ], a P-51 that ditched in a lake near Weimar etc.
As always , money is an obstacle, along with ,IMHO , the stigma still attached to WW2 relics in Germany - I don't think there is the 'will' especially at Govt. level to recover these reminders of a dark past.
Luckily organizations like the 'Messerscmitt Flight' at Manching are moving forward and showing that it is 'OK' to display Germanys'aviation heritage.

Christoph Regel has detailed a number of documentary sources in the book he co-authored 'German Secret Flight Test Centres'. The most obvious place to start is RL 36 (Records of the E-Stellen) at the BA-MA Freiburg. These records are, however, far from complete, which is why Christoph invested a considerable research effort in locating former pilots.

Lou Luma claim, Jan 22, 1944

162.40.175.109
On January 22, 1944 1stLt James F (Lou) Luma (USAAF), serving with 418 Sqn, claimed a "Me-210 or Me-410" at 0017 hours, 20 miles SW of Wunstorf A/F. Can anyone identify possible losses for this date and location? It is unlikely to be an Me-210, an Me-110 or Me-410 is more likely. And where exactly is Wunstorf A/F?
Thanks.

Wunstorf is a small town some miles west of Hannover with a nice airfield and museum . Northern Part of Germany .
(The museum has a salvaged and restored Ju 52. It may have other aircraft, but a quick check did not reveal any information regarding additional aircraft.

Has there ever been published any memoires, articles etc. by/about Klaus Scheer? In any language? (IIRC he moved to Brazil post war?)
Scheer was one of the prominents of 4./NJG 100. From about January 1944 until June the same year this Ju 88 nightfighter staffel was based at Tallinn, Estonia - the very reason for my interest. Scheer made numerous claims during this timeframe.
Thanking in advance,
