Where can one find Feldpost Nummers?
Wed May 21 21:10:55 2026
64.235.173.32

Is there a comprehensive, up-to-date listing of all Feldpost Nummers for the entire war? If so, where can such knowledge be found? If not, where can one find the largest accumulation of identified F.Pnr's?
TIA!

Although I do not own it, there is a 3 volume set:
Die deutsche Feldpostubersicht by Norbert Kannapin that was published by Biblio Verlag, 1980-1982.

Hope this helps,
Ed

Significance of Feldpost Nummern?

I think I understand some of it, but would anyone care to explain it a bit more?

Thanks in advance,

There was a discussion about this a while back. I think the consensus was that there is no significance in a given number, or there shouldn't be since it was a security code that shouldn't reveal anything to outsiders. The object of these systems (the British used BFPO or British Forces Post Office numbers) was to allow families to write to "their boys" without broadcasting the whereabouts of units on thousands of envelopes going through the public postal system each day.

Also, relatives did not need to know where to address a letter so long as they had the FPN. The armed forces would - with luck! - redirect all mail to a particular FPN to the outfit's present location.

If the system was perfect you wouldn't be able to deduce which number corresponded to which unit unless you had some additional information from another source.

Hope that helps.

The German language website Kampfgeschwader 3 "Blitz" contains a list of Feldpostnummern for KG 3. The website address is:

http://www.ulbi.de/kg3/kg3main.htm

The sections are:

Main Page

Unit emblems - While clickable, these lead nowhere but back to the main page.

Background on the webmaster's grandfather, Kurt Ulbricht

Ju 88 K5 + DL of KG 3

Clicking on the photo leads to a 2-part article on this huge model. Below the photo are loss details for the actual aircraft and photo and biography information of its crew.

Biografien (biographies) - References to 1 published and 2 planned books on former members of KG 3.

Buch zum KG3 (books on KG 3) - Request for assistance with proposed book on memoirs of a member (members?) of KG3.

Bundesarchiv - A rather nice illustration of the indexing structure used by the Bundesarchiv is presented, this one leading to RL 10: Fliegende Verbände. A description of the contents of RL 10 is then given.

Bücherliste (book lists) - Fairly large lists of books, followed by more detailed information and photos of book covers.

Dt. Kruez (German cross in gold) - List of KG 3 winners of this award.

Embleme (emblems) - Emblems of KG 3 illustrated.

Feldpostnummern - List of KG 3 Feldpostnummern.

Flugplätze (airfields) - Commanders, staff, dates, locations, and aircraft flown by KG 3 units.

Formationen (formations) - Illustrations of formations and emblems. Explanation with illustration of markings.

Ju 88 5K+AC - This section is actually on known aircraft of KG 3 and not just this Ju 88.

Ju 88 5K+AC - Information on this aircraft which has been recovered and which remains in now located in the Northern Fleet Air Museum in Archangel/Murmansk. There appears to be a question as to whether this is really a Ju 88. Information is also given about the plane's crew.

Links to information on 5 Do 17's and 1 Ju 88 of KG 3 - Not all of these links still work.

Links to lists of existing Ju 88's - Only 1 of these links currently works.

Kennungen (markings)

Emblems - Color emblem illustrations with color and b&w photos showing emblems on actual aircraft.

Unit fuselage codes - Listing of codes and the units to which they applied.

Reichsverteidigung (fuselage bands) - Color illustrations of various bands plus 3 color photos of actual aircraft showing the bands.

Unit names - Listing of units with their names.

Kurzchronik (short chronicle) - Short chronicle of KG 3 "Blitz".

Luftgaue - Actually, while starting with the Luftgaue, this is a very nice explanation of the organization of the Luftwaffe from the Luftgaue down to the Geschwader.

M.I.A. - Listing giving pertinent details for KG 3 M.I.A.'s.

Spuren (trackings) - Here the webmaster has noted where he has found mentions of KG 3 in various books, along with referencing information for these books.

Richard

The Kannapin book says (verbatim):

05 690 (U) Fl.H.Kdtr. (E) Weiden, (2) Fl.H.Kdtr. (E) 33/XIII, (10)30.6.44 Fl.H.Kdtr. E 222/XVII.

The (U) means "from the start of war", (2) means "starting sometime in the period (discounting bureaucratic time lag)28 Apr - 14 Sep 1940"; (10); starting in the time period 24 Mar to 6 Nov 1944.

Fl.H.Kdtr. means "Fliegerhorste Kommandantur", ie: the guy in charge of an airfield / airport. The (E) or E after that means its for a reserve airfield, presumeably at Weiden.

The meaning of "33/XIII" etc. is unknown apart from being a more specific part of the unit identifier.

I hope that helps.

Hi Marko,

A O 111/XVII is Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur A (o) 111/XVII, which was based at Agram for most of it's existence.

If 3752 is a feldpost-number, then it belonged to leichte Gebirgs-Jäger-Kolonne bei Befehlshaber der Ordnungs-Polizei Griechenland.

As I suspected. Seems a lot of the JG 5 personnel rotated back to JGr West after being in action in the north.
