From 12 O'Clock High!:
Could anyone tell me the locations of any of the following airfields (nearest big town and/or section of front) or recommend any decent sites that might provide information. All are German spellings. Most believed to be in Soviet Union
Dretum
Orscha
Schatalowka-Ost (northern Soviet Union?)
Mikojanowka
Konotop
Szoltzy
Siwerskaja
Pankowo (central Soviet Union?)
Herzogenaurach (Germany?)
Kirowograd (southern Soviet Union?)
Orlowka
Wassiljewka
Kramatorskaya
Stari-Blisnezy
Titowka (central Soviet Union?)

You have shot yourself in the foot by limiting your resources to the worldwide web. If you want to pursue only this resource, however, simply put each place name that you have into Google and examine the hyperlinks that are returned.
There is an excellent printed compilation of airfields used by the Luftwaffe, including those in occupied countries, the USSR, etc., that appeared about two-three years ago, but I do not have my copy to hand at present for bibliographic information. Perhaps some other reader knows it (a large paperback with RLM grau-grün covers and all the visual appeal of the dullest tech manual). This masterful work will give you correct spellings in alphabetical order (also a supplementary list by country) but not too much location information.
For airfields exclusively within Germany, there is an excellent directory by Karl Ries. This includes location information and sketch maps for many (but not all) of the installations.

Hi Andy,
The book that Rabe referred to is:
"Fliegerhorstkommandanturen und Flugplätze der deutschen Luftwaffe 1935-1945" by Gianfranco Mattiello, Biblio Verlag 2000, no ISBN
In an appendix (by Joachim Streit), it actually does provide location information for many of the airfields you mentioned:
- Dretum: listed as Dretun, no country or location specified
- Orscha: aka Orsa, 80 km S Witebsk
- Schatalowka-Ost: in the Soviet Union but no location given
(location of Schatalowka listed as 55 km SSE Smolensk)
- Mikojanowka: aka Oktyabrskiy, 25 km SW Bjelgorod
- Konotop: 210 km NE Kiew
- Szoltzy: aka Solzy b. Pskow, in the Soviet Union but no location given
- Siwerskaja: aka Siverskiy, 65 km SSW Leningrad
- Pankowo: in the Soviet Union but no location given
- Herzogenaurach: 20 km NW Nürnberg
- Kirowograd: 105 km SSE Tscherkassy
- Orlowka: not listed
- Wassiljewka: not listed
(there is a Wassilkow, 25 km SW Kiew)
- Kramatorskaya: listed as Krematorskaja, aka Kramatorsk, 170 km SE Charkow
- Stari-Blisnezy: not listed
- Titowka: aka Titovka, in the Soviet Union but no location given

Hi Leon,
Thank you very much for taking the time to look up all of those airfields, it is much appreciated.
I'll order a copy of the book although my German is very poor.
If you have time is it possible you could look up the following:
Baranowitschi
Gosstkino (northern Soviet Union?)
Saporoshje
Oserkajz
Dno
Rowenki
Nowo Iwanowskij
Bobruisk
I promise I will not ask for anymore.

Just to add that the Public Record Office in London has files in the AIR40 series called something like "Airfields, Russia A" through to "Airfields Russia Z"
These are like scrapbooks with any mention of (say) Orscha pasted on to a page. Snippets of intelligence like "A Kampfgruppe was here on 19 April 1943" (that's a fictitious example) but I think they also give latitude/longitude references.
Another point: Rabe says about correct spellings but wartime German sources aren't always very good at spelling foreign place names and of course they way that Russian names are rendered into German isn't the way they'd come out in English, so it's usually a good idea to look for likely variants on the version you have. I've seen any number of permutations on Baranowitz/Baranowitze/ Baranowitschi for instance.

Hi Nick,
Many thanks. I really must try and get down to the PRO some day, the list of files I wish to look at continues to get longer.
