Some doubts on Rumanian Ju-88 A in USA
Sun Oct 22 19:57:59 2000
I have got some new info on the Junkers Ju-88 A-4 restored at USAF Museum in Ohio, USA. I'll be very please someone could correct or confirm them:
1 - Pilot's name: Some sources gives Theodore Nikolai, now I got as Nicolae Teodoru.
2 - Is truth he was a former pilot from Lares air line ?
3 - Also got the information that the number 105 given to the plane after restoration is wrong. If true what was the original one on Rumanian service?
Many thanks for any help,
Sergio Luis

The RAF Crashed Enemy Aircraft report dated 26th July, 1943 is quite detailed and specific on the markings with sketches and dimensions. No mention was made of a
number on the tail. Since the report was so detailed and specific, I doubt this was an oversight. I have seen similar markings noted in other RAF reports of this type.

So I must redone my data for this plane! Do you know someone that could send me a copy of this document?
But there are still a mistery. Whether the plane had no numerals may we presume it was a brand new? If positive it had no radio markings too?

The aircraft was very low time, apparently the defecting pilot picked the newest aircraft available and reportedly had only ferry and test time on it. The RAF report also notes
the Stkz, which along with the German crosses, had been overpainted, but still could be made out.

My copy of the RAF report is really fuzzy, but it appears the the Stkz is NP+MK, the "P" and "K" are pretty clear, but the other letters might be "H" or "K".

Ex-Rumanian Ju 88
Mon Oct 23 21:09:33 2000
First, the mentioned Ju 88, W.Nr. 430650, was a D-1 long-range recce version, not an A-4.
The pilot who defected with it on July 22, 1943 was Sergent major TR aviator Nicolae Teodoru.
The aircraft was originally part of ARR's Escadrila 2 recunoastere - 2nd Long-Range Reconnaissance Squadron, that is - based at Mariupol, in the Ukraine, at the time of
defection.
The aircraft was definitely not '105' - serial/tail number assigned for ARR bomber Ju 88As - but rather most probably '1', painted in white on tail (Rumanian recce Ju 88Ds
were coded in the 1-12 series, while bomber Ju 88As in the 100 series).
I hope the above info helps clarifying the issue you have raised.

P.S. For further details of this Ju 88D, and Rumanian wartime aircraft in general, you may want to consult also my book: 'Rumanian Air Force. The Prime Decade
(1938-1947)', published by Squadron/Signal, last Summer.

The website Dornier Do-24 , by Andre de Zwart, mentions the possibility of a Do-24 surviving in the U.S. The website address is:
http://www.dornier24.com/
The mention will be found in the section entitled "musea".

The few pictures known of this bird, shaows a machine looking pretty much standard 74/75/76 with a light coloured rudder. Some sources that served on Herdla has stated
the rudder was offwhite, others yellow, thats your choise.
He was staffel kapitaen in 12./JG 5 and that unit was operating from Herdla NW of Bergen from late 1944 til the end in may '45.
The spesial markings of his "blue 4" was the name "Gretel" and a green heart like JG 54 on the left side below the windscreen.
There is a picture of in on SIG Luftwaffe Norways home page.

Is this "our" FW-190A-8??
Mon Dec 4 23:21:42 2000
We have one of the "Texas FW-190s" at a tiny (I mean TINY) local museum and it is a late war A-8 from JG 5 coded Blue 4. It was one of several lost on the same day and
it came down and went splat, 100% destroyed. It was not recovered until a few years ago and it has been undergoing restoration at the San Antonio air museum, which
owns a total of >2< aircraft... Pretty incredible to come around a corner and come face to face with a nearly-restored FW-190.
The museum doesn't have much in the way of historical information on their prize, at least on/near the display. I would be interested to know if this Blue 4 is Linz's
machine.

Texas FW 190's
Tue Dec 5 08:19:19 2000
Hi, Gordon!
Yes, this is the same aircraft (or rather, this is what has been done to the wreckage of Linz' aircraft...)
According to an article in Jet&Prop I believe, the resulting "restoration" is a terrible mix of early and late mark FW 190 parts, making it a FW 190A-?????. But it looks nice
from a distance.
As far as I remember, the "White 1" of Werner Gayko is also in Texas, I have a video of it meeting it's former pilot, Heinz Orlowski from my recollection, the one who
ditched it, when he went to Texas to see the result of the restoration.
