Ju 88 shadowing AC, what kind?

I'm painting a GAF plane in the distance which is "shadowing" an 8th AF group of B-17a over Holland. The date is Jan., 1944. Please suggest the most likely German AC to paint starting with a Ju88.
Any other info is welcome, color, markings, etc.

This would be a 2 eng. plane flying way outside the bomber stream to make recon on it, headings, altitude, etc. and not an interceptor.

I was going to paint a Ju88A but research says I may be off on this point. Perhaps a G or S model might be more realistic?

Thanks for your help,
Bob

Gebhard Aders' "History of the German Night Fighter Force" lists a variety of C, R and G models as serving in the Luftbeobachterstaffeln.

Nick,
Do you have a quick translation for the above?
Thanks for your help,
Bob

I,m not Nick,
but maybe I can provide you with a translation nevertheless?

"Luftbeobachterstaffeln" translates quite litterally to
"Air Observer Squadrons".
