Hello, I am looking for RAF and USAAF order of battle for MTO on June 4th, 1944, the day Rome was liberated. I do know the Americans had the 12th AF on Corsica and the 15th AF in Southern Italy. What about the British? Where was the RAF located at this time? Was there bomber squadrons and fighter squadrons serving over Italy at this time? If yes, how many squadrons and planes?

I need specific details on all Air Forces. Trying to figure out the over-all strenght of allied air power on June 4th, 1944 in the Mediterranean.

Thanks a lot,

Stefan

There is one complete Order of Battle as of May 12, 1944, published as appendix in the book History of the Second World War - The Mediterranean and Middle East, Vol.VI part 1, published by HMSO, 1986, ISBN 630936 9. The book used to be obtainable from HMSO bookshop, 49 High Holborn, London WC1V 6BH, UK. The price used to be GBP 60,- but I know this volume has been on sale som e years ago. The Order of Battle is huge and falls beyond the scope of this board.

The Air Force Historical Research Agency, 600 Chennault Circle, Maxwell AFB, AL 36112-6424, USA, holds a file of MAAF orders of battle by month throughout 1944. These monthly reports run 30-50 pages each and include ALL USAAF and RAF units under MAAF command (basically all Allied units in the MTO) down to squadron or, in a few cases, independent flight, level. The types of aircraft flown and numbers of them on charge are also given.
