Prior to the war, the small city was located in Eastern Poland. The name is alternatively spelled as Kuniow.
In 1939, it had 2377 inhabitants.
The city's German name was Kuhnau.
According to Flugzeugbestand des Stabes und der III./JG 51, equipped with Bf109G-6s, in Juli '44 it stationed at the following places: Minsk, Pinsk, Kowno, Cuniow, so the city should be somewhere in that area.
Interestingly, a Hungarian Stuka squadron (102/1.) also stationed there at the end of June 1944.
