The National Air and Space Museum has a web site describing their new restoration facility presently under construction. the URL is:

http://www.nasm.edu/NASMhome.html

From the home page, select "Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center".

To browse the list of anticipated artifacts planned for display, select "Artifacts" and either "Aircraft" or "Spacecraft" (some LW rockets).

Sounds like this wil be Luftwaffe heaven, with aircraft on display that haven't seen the light of day for ages. Display artifacts may be either fully restored, like the Ar 234, or
"as-is" like the Me 410.

But either way, it will be a great place to visit.

Looks like the same place, nearby Andrews AFB.
Oh boy, they've got half a dozen hangar full of rarities that make the exibition at the Museum itself look almost nothing.
For us LW fans I remember seeing the Ar234, 196 !!, Me163, 262, 410, Ju388,Do335, Fw190, He162 and lot of other stuff, like the Fritz if I'm not mistaken.
That not to mention the Jap. Sieran being restored and the Baka(kinda 262) forgotten suspended in a corner http://www.lwag.org/ubb/frown.gif(
That was 02 years ago and worth every effort to go there !!

All the best
Paulo Dario

If you navigate to the list of aircraft to be displayed, you'll see all those listed. It will be nice to see an FW 190 F and Il-2 in the same building, nearly side by side..

He-219 in the USA?
Tue Jul 24 18:19:25 2001

I'm in the middle of planning a fall getaway and would like to see some Luftwaffe planes.

The Air and Space museum in DC has a AR-234B. Nice display?

Is there a He-219 in the states?

Many thanks...

Dave,
Presently the Ar 234 is in storage at Silver Hill and is in a building that is not on the tour.

The He 219 is also in storage and not visible.

Also the FW 190F is in a building not currently on the tour.

The NASM Silver Hill tour does get you ap close and personal to the Go 229, the Bachem Natter, the Ar 196.

All the planes you mentioned and many more will eventually be displayed in the new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy enter under construction.

If you're interested, here is the web site.

This month's Smithsonian magazine has an article and pictures about the new airplane facility. One photo shows the "Fw-190F, the only one with electric gear and flaps ...which served on both the East and West fronts" being loaded onto a flatbed. Accurate or no? Also noted the difficulty of moving a wingspan of 34 feet down a 30 foot wide road - they had to stop and pull up a roadsign.

Anyone have information on the history of this bird ? Later rebuilt as an F-8. This is the NASM 190F-8 , looking for earlier history details when it was an A-7

TIA

640.049 - Fw 190 A-7?
Thu Feb 12 11:04:34 2004

Dave,

sorry, but your information on NASMs Fw 190 F-8 is based on older publications and unfortunately not up to date. This bird never was a recycled A-7 and 640.049 is not a valid Werknummer for a Fw 190 airframe anyway. There is no evidence, that it was anything else but a regular F-8/R1.
