Hi there. I've been researching a relatives service as a signaller in an army flak unit assigned to the 9th Panzer Division (102, then 287 Regt). In reviewing a book on the 9th Panzer I was surprised to see a picture and description of a Hermann Goering Flak unit moving with them in Russia. No unit number, just a pic of a towed 88. I've looked in the OOB and didn't see any reference to a Luftwaffe flak unit working with the 9th. Maybe they were passing through the lines.

Any ideas why they were there? Could they have been attached? I will try to provide more detail (I can probably come up with the general location).

It appears they were attached and were part of the Panzer-Division HG. The following may be useful. The relevant information appears near the bottom of the page.

I sense there is a misunderstanding here.
Each armoured division had some integral flak to protect itself;
The TOE of Heer armoured divisions was 74 units of 20-mm, and 8 DP 88-mm.
TOE of an SS armoured division was 114 units of 20-mm and 12 DP 88-mm.

All the rest of the Flak was under Luftwaffe command - unlike the case in all other armies - and was organized into LW Flak Corps and LW Flak Divisions. These were allocated to ground troops, and I am confident that the picture you have would have been of such a unit working with an armoured division.
Information on Flak formations can be found here: http://www.ww2.dk/ground/flak.html

Thank you all. I'm fairly confident that he was with the Army regiment that was integral to the 9th Panzer. I have photocopies of awards, all of which cite Heer awards (and he rec'd the Army flak badge). They also list the regiment that was part of the 9th according to the OOB.

I was just surprised to come across the HG unit in conjunction with the 9th - I guess I was under the impression that the one AA regiment was all they were allocated. Thanks again!

Luftwaffen-Flakartillerie

Huge subject, but essentially a number of regiments of motorized Flak operated in direct support of the Heer on the various combat fronts during the war. They belong to Luftwaffe Flakdivisionen and Flakbrigaden, but the individual Regimenter and their organic Abteilungen were operationally attached to the Heer's AOKs and AKs. The Flak guns were employed offensively and defensively against enemy armor and strongpoints. The AOK or AK exercised tactical control over the target assignments and other day-to-day matters, but for all other purposes (administration, discipline, supply, replacements, etc.) they came under their respective Luftwaffe Flakbrigade or Flakdivision. At any given time during the 1941-45 period, this specialized sub-branch of the Luftwaffe's Flakwaffe probably did not sum to more 10% or so of all of the assets belonging to the Flakartillerie. While older personnel general manned the other 90%, the men assigned to the motorized Flak were in the 18 to 28 age range. The Hermann Göring Flak unit that you referred to was probably supporting the 9. Pz.Div. on that date or, as you suggested, moving through the division. Flak-Rgt. "General Göring" had four large Abteilungen (I. - IV.). At least two of these (I. and IV.) served in Russia in 1941.

If anyone is able to help with the question marks and fill the gaps I’d be very grateful.

Regarding Traba 91/VI, I once received information which confused me. I was told that Traba 91/VI reported ten men MIA at Stalingrad (Dec. 1942 to Jan. 1943), but I think the unit may have been confused with Traba 92/VI (L 18253), which I believe was under Dinafü 9.Fl.Div. between 1942-44 (and 9.Fl.Div. was destroyed at Stalingrad). Could Traba 91/VI have been in the North Caucasus and Crimea during this period, not Stalingrad?

Regarding other sources, Michael Holm lists Traba 92/VI thus:
07-02-43:- under 9.Fl.Div. in Crimea [I presume being rebuilt after Stalingrad?]
May to Aug. 1944:- under 9.Fl.Div. around Breslau
01-10-44:- under 9.Fl.Div. around Saarbrucken

H-A. Koch says Traba 92/VI was destroyed in 1944

Any clarification would be most welcome!

Many thanks,
Karl-Peter
