Ordering NARA microfilms
Fri Jan 18 21:11:11 2002

In the Lw in Norway I saw, with great interest, the first 3 months of detailed Lw production. I am interested in getting the info for the rest of the 11 months it covers, but have not been able to contact the author of the piece, Bjorn Hafsten.

In his preface to the Jan-Mar 44 figures he mentions getting the info from NARA T-177, reel No. 42. How does one go about ordering that reel.

Thanks for any info.
George

George -

Just go to the U.S. National Archives website at www.nara.gov (http://www.nara.gov). It's a mammoth site, but once you've gotten your orientation look for ordered information. The last time I checked 35mm microfilm rolls were priced at U.S. $35 each, and I believe that covers mailing costs to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.

Silly question, but...

... once I have a microfilm roll, how can I read or
print it?

Thanks
Antonio

Not a silly question, Antonio. We all have to start somewhere.
To work with (read) the 35mm microfilm, all you need to do is to go to your public library or to a nearby college or university library. Just about all of them have microfilm readers and reader/printers capable of handling 35mm and 16mm microfilm as well as microfiche.
If you plan to work with lots of microfilm over the next year or more, then you may want to buy a microfilm reader of your own. Prices range from $400 to $2,000 or more. I bought one of the cheaper ones many years ago and have used it for reading my way through probably 2,500 rolls of microfilm. It's indispensable if you are going to do a lot of high-end research - the really good stuff isn't in books but rather in the archives and/or on microfilm.
Good luck.

For further discussion on what to do with microfilm, once you get it, see the 3 topics on this subject currently in the "Document Handling Issues" forum here on the LWAG site.

Richard

Microfilm orders in NARA

Dear Fellow Researchers,

who have an experience in microfilm ordering in NARA?
I'm searching KTBs of some Luftwaffe units in Nov.-Dec.1943.
NARA Guide for the Record Group RG242 (German Documents)is absent. Where I can find microfilm roll numbers for II./SG2 or 9.Flakdivision, for example?

Best regards,
Andrey Kuznetsov

Unfortunately only about 3% of the official records of the Luftwaffe have survived and there are no surviving KTB, Anlagen or other documents for the units you mentioned. The only way to obtain such data is by luck while scanning through surviving records, a very laborous task.

As for ordering microfilms from NARA, contact their website at www.nara.gov .

Good luck!
