My father, who served with Patton's 3rd Army, brought back the control stick, manufacturer's plate (MCU) and the red tag "Notzug fur Fahrwerk" from the the above mentioned bird. Does anyone have any information on this aircraft?

With regards,

Bill

You say you have the manufacturer's plate. Does it say Bf 109G-14? I do not have my manufacturer code book handy, but I'll look it up. Normally, 109s in the 49xxxx range are G-10 aircraft.

Hi J,

Yes sir, the plate is stamped 8-109 G 14 at the top above the wnr. At the bottom right is stamped M C U, which I think is the manufacturer's code.

MCU is the code for Erla Maschinenwerk G.m.b.H., Flugzeugbau. According to the Me 109 book by Prien & Rodeike the series 491000 - 491600 was assigned to G-10s. Is it possible to get a picture or scan of the plate? I collect WW2 German airplane ID plates and have never seen a G-14 plate. Thank you. Steve

Thank you for the MCU info, Steve. I don't have a camera, but I'll see about borrowing one to get a close-up photo. The plate itself is crudely made. Just a plain piece of duralum marked with individually stamped numbers and letters as follows:

8-109 G 14

491496 (here a small 260 in circle)

3/45 M C U

The size is 7.4 cms by 3.8 cms.

Every time I hold the stick I wonder what stories it can tell!

Like Steven, I'd love to see a copy of this plate. Rather than photograph how about a photocopy? Are you in the US? I'll give you my address and pay the postage. Contact me off board [email protected]

Thanks
