Uffz. Hans Heinz & Gefr. Leonhard Bothe, shot down 31.March 1942 by Flak, 20 km E of Lubin on the Leningrad (St.Petersburg) - Moscow rail line. Pilot (age 22) buried in Moldy, Bordfunker Bothe evacuated to Germany by rail.

This is a rather-early Ju 87D-1.

The III Gruppe of "Stuka Eins" retained their First Gruppe (ex-I/Tr.Gr.186) Staffel-designator letters when they were incorporated into St.G. 1

This ebay photo is similar to another of the same wreck that was recently sold.

Hello GRM and all!

Mr Morrison your note of St.G. 1 Staffel letters* is highly interesting. Could this be the reason why the I Gruppe St.G./SG 1 used the non-standard Staffel letters? Like A5+AJ (photo), A5+GG (Stab/I Gruppe?? code from air observation logs) etc.

I/Tr.Gr. 186 was incorporated as III/St.G. 1 already in 1940 (yes?) so the non-standard Staffel letter practice went on practically during the whole war!

Can anyone else bring more light to this matter?

Yes the codes for some units are extremely confusing. however as a result of drafting mini-unit histories for all the ground attack units Ihave sorted out all of them along with the nuances of periods of use:
Stab/StG1: (A5+_A)
I./StG 1(first formation):(A5+_B, H, K, L) ) - [May 39 to Jan 42]
I./StG 1(second formation): (A5+_B, H, K, L) ) - [Jun 43 to Oct 43]
II./StG1 : (6G+_D, R, S, T) 1 - [Jul 40 to Oct 43]
III.StG 1: : (J9+_B, H, K, L) 1 - [Jul 40 to Oct 43]
IV.(Erg.)/StG 1Codes: (A5+_U, V?) 1 - [Dec 40 to May 43]
does this explain all?
