Hi all

On the 13-5-44 I/KG27 lost He111H-20 W.Nr 700415 90% dam.
Force landed Pl.Qu. 8436 as a result of Fighter fire.
Lt Günther Manns KIA, Uffz Albert Brunke WIA, Fw Karl Schano WIA.

What I would like to know is :-

(1) where is Pl.Qu. 8436 ? I think KG27 were based in Italy at the time(may be wrong about this.

(2) Is the date right for this loss ?

Regards

David

.....is located on the Black Sea coast of Bessarabia to the NNE of Constanta, David. I./KG 27 transferred from Tiraspol to Focºani/Romania on 9 Apr. For the remainder of Apr and until 11 May, supported the heavy fighting in Crimea where the Soviets had commenced an offensive to retake it on 8 Apr. Flew supply flights from Focºani into Sarabus and returned with wounded. It is not known if combat missions were also flown. The He 111H-20 could be configured either way. With the loss of Crimea, departed Focºani and returned to Krosno/S Poland on 15 May.

KG 27 - not in Italy

Steve W. has given you the important answers.

This is just to add that KG 27 certainly wasn't operating in Italy in 1944. The only Luftwaffe bombers in Italy in May 1944 were (IIRC) II./LG 1, III./KG 76 and 5./KG 76. They were all pulled out within days of the Normandy landings.
