I am trying to find out which Luftwaffe units participated in the attacks between Dummer Lake and Steinhuden Lake against the 96th, 388th and 452nd BGs. It was reported that the Me-109s were painted like P-51s and the Fw-190s were painted like P-47s. Considering how they attacked and the mystery paint jobs, I am wondering if this was the Sturmstaffel 1. They had balck and white stripes on the fuselage just like American aircraft with "invasion stripes".
These e/f were high and right to the formation when spotted. They crossed the formation and poured in from 10-11 o'clock level on the initial attack. In the second attack, one Fw collided with the B-17 next to my father's. Both aircraft went down without any chutes seen. My father remembers this mission vividly as if it were yesterday. The number of e/f and the way they attacked is what he remembers the most.
Any ideas what Luftwaffe squadrons were involved in this attack?
Thanks,
Heather
