KG 76
Tue Apr 17 14:07:14 2001
KG 76 was heavily involved and suffered heavy losses in the noon raid over London, 15 Sept 1940. Yet there seems little information on this group on the various e-boards. I'm after information on one particular casualty, but as yet I've drawn a blank. Can anyone point me to the history of this group, particularly during the the Battle of Britain? Is there a historian or such? Many thanks. Martin

KG 76 losses
Wed Apr 18 13:24:31 2001
Jan,
Thanks for message. It was werke 2361. I might explain at this point that I've done quite a bit of research already. I know of the pilot, Oblt Zehbe, and where he was born (Kiel). I've tried to contact Zehbe's relatives, but with no luck. Hence my attempt to contact any members of his unit, 1/KG 76, or someone who knows about Zehbe or his unit or any archives that may exist.
Zehbe died of severe wounding on 16 Sept 1940. My late mother lived in London, and witnessed Zehbe's parachute landing. Hence my interest. Thanks and best wishes. Martin

JU88 Shoot down in Somerset
Sun Sep 2 09:25:18 2001
May 3rd 1941 JU88 M7+HA of 1KGr/806 was shot down and crashed in flames at Moon Hill near Stoke St Michael Somerset in England. This aircraft was one of the first to be destroyed by 600 Sqn using the Bristol Beaufighter. This one fell to the guns of Flying Officer Woodwards and his AI Op Sgt Lipscombe.
The crew of the JU88 survived to be taken prisoner could anyone tell me their names and if they are alive today?

KG 30 pilot research
Tue Jan 15 22:31:48 2002
I have an interest in airforce history of the Second World War, particularly in relation to my home country New Zealand. I recently I acquired a set of documents to a Luftwaffe JU-88A-6 (3451) 4D+GL (his diary says 4D+OL). The pilot I believe was from from KG30/1 as this was his gruppe on the the Iron Cross documentation dated 1940, of course he could have changed groups after this?? Anyway this pilot was shot down over England (Vale Acre Farm, Aldershot, Dorset 2.35am) on the night of 8/9 July 1941 by a Bristol Blenheim nightfighter. the crew baled out and he became a POW in Canada. I have his extensive POW diary, POW sports certificates, Reichsportab-zeichen award (Bronze), Iron Cross (1st & 2nd class), and Combat clasps (silver & bronze) documents. I am keen to get further information on this pilot .
Could anyone help me with his gruppes base when he was shot down? I thought they were based in Norway/Denmark but have checked records for losses at that time and none appears to match this aircraft. The diary also says they flew over Southhampton enroute to Birmingham on the night they were shot down, so this indicates that they would not have come from Norway or Denmark, possibly France? Do anyone have any idea where they would have been based, and where I could find losses documentation to match with this aircraft. The Pilots name is The Pilots Surname is Schonauer, and some documents have Peter and others Wilhelm as the Christian name. He was born 6 January 1918.

213.122.68.45
Hi Claudio,
I have since 1996 been researching (F)123, from my files I can tell you the following information:
16.03.43. Bf 109G-4/R3 Wnr.14926 Lt. Sickinger.
Location, Cherbourg, France.
Aircraft suffered an engine fire, pilot abandoned aircraft.
14.04.43. Bf 109G-4/R3 Wnr.14917 Lt. Sickinger.
Location, Theville, France.
Pilot crash landed aircraft on fire returning from mission.
Lt. Sickinger was badly burnt and sadly passed away the following day (15.04.43) at the Luftwaffe hospital at Cherbourg.
Note; you can find a poor photo of Lt. Sickinger in the German publication "Flugzeug" Foto-Archiv Band 2.
Hope this helps!
If you come across any other details regarding the 1, 4 & 5 Staffel (F)123 I would be very interested.
Regards,
Melvin.

109's
Wed Oct 8 19:13:29 2003
195.92.67.65
Hi
Strange, It is reported ( the argentinian pilot ), Henman's 109 went into the sea, south of Portland,
However Khinn ( a Burmese pilot ) claimed a 109 as probable,
Is Sickinger actually Khinn's claim ?
Was there another loss for this day ?
Is there a mix up somehow , as Henman's went into the sea, or did it ?? and Khinn's was only a probable.
This is interesting .
On the subject of 1/(f)123 a mate of mine some years ago brought Kurt Thuener over to see his crash site, Somewhere I have video footage of his return in the 90's
Do you have any info on the camera installation on his 109 Wn4970.
Cheers

Hi Jerry,
Very interested to learn of Kurt's visit to the crash site at Mardle Wood, Buckfastleigh during the 90's!! Would be very interested to know if your mate has photographic photo's of the visit? I am also desperate for a photo of Kurt(wartime)for my 1./(F)123 archive, any chance?
Jerry, do you know if Kurt is still with us??
Regarding his 109, I have the detailed five page A.I.1(k) report No.4/1942, it does mention the double camera lens recovered: 1:5 F = 50 cms, also the A.I.(g)report notes the details of the film cassette: FK 30, Fl Nr. 38805 Carl Zeiss, Jena, so the camera installed in kurt's 109 was almost certainly an Rb 50/30.
Sincere regards,
Melvin.

Hi Melvin,
yeah loads of film was taken by many, I will ask around for some stills , i was video man, so I only have this.
Kurt's Leica was thrown over a hedge after he landed, funnily post war a local had a leica of the same type ! but later sold it on !
Don't know if Kurt's still with us, He lived in the old east germany, but I will ask and see if there are any wartime pic's of him, He was presented with a 1/48th model to record his return by a local aviation group.
I would be interested in either a copy of the five page report, or a source for this, I have only found so far, the one page report. I found snippets of the AIK report in other files at the PRO.
It was great meeting the only 109 pilot to come down in devon, I presume you know he crossed the english coast with another 109, but they then seperated.
Cheers

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for getting back to me, will of course send you the documents ASAP, please give me your postal address via my email address and I will post next week.
Incidently, do you know Philippa Hodgkiss? I have known her for about 15 years and sent me details of the crash location. I know that she and the late Peter Foote visited the crash site in the 80's and carried out an excavation but I believe not much found! All I have is a small piece of aluminium from Kurt's 109.

Hi
I have heard of phillipa, but never met,the site was dug by a local group before their visit, Can't recall what they recovered !, ( the bulk of the a/c was removed shortly after the crash ).
I think there is a /123 , '88' down this way will have to check my notes for info.
Seem to recall at the time of the crash they found it was actually bombed up and armed with 20mm cannon in the nose ?
Cheers
Jerry
