Some Luftbeobachtungsstaffel questions

What was the precise purpose of a Luftbeobachtungsstaffel? Only illumination during night ops?? Or did they have any other functions?
Were they administrative or operational attached to a (NJG) Gruppe/Geschwader or did they operate on their own?
Which aircraft did they usually use?
Thanks & regards
Ivo

My understanding is that their function was to shadow and report on Allied raids. This seems for example to have been the function L.Beo.St. 7, based at Villaorba, Italy in the summer of 1944 (they mustered 6(3) Ju 88s on 3 September).
The war diary of Stab/NJG 6 in the Bundesarchiv at Freiburg also mentions Luftbeobachter (= Air Observer) operations:
12.06.44 ... Air Observer operations (00.28–01.45) two Ju88s (Salvator 1 and 4) from ECHTERDINGEN to radio beacons Ida and Kuli. Recalled early.
It was Beleuchterstaffeln that did the illuminating, using what RAF reports refer to as "fighter flares"

An extremely important element of the day RLV...

...from late 1943 to mid-1944, the Luftbeobachterstaffeln shadowed and reported on the size and strength of the American bomber streams, as Nick says. One of their major tasks was to locate areas of weak escort strength -- an extremely hazardous undertaking! I believe that ultimately each Jagddivision of the RLV had a Staffel, or at least a detachment, assigned to it. The main reference that I'm aware of is the I. Jagdkorps KTB. I'd like to hear from anyone (Larry, Rabe, Artie?) with copies of primary RLM documentation on the formation, TOEs, etc. of these Staffeln.
