my father was returning from an op in a Wellington this night and reported a visual SOS from a position in the North Sea. Air Sea rescue picked a german crew later from the reported position. I think they may have been on a raid to Hull as the Wellingtons were told to avoid Hull due to a raid in progress. I assume the crew were POWs from then on. Can anyone suggest how I can find out which aircraft and crew they may have been?

c. 30 aircraft operated over Hull on the night of 9 March 1943. They were drawn from KG2 and II/KG40. One aircraft was unaccounted for : Do.217E-4[U5+DL; wnr.5468. Crew: Lt Günter Loew(p), Obgefr.Edmund Brendle(obs, Uffz Heinrich Gerhardt(wop), Uffz Helmut Gass(mech.
Would be interested in the reported position and details of your Father's aircraft and sqdn.

thanks for the reply. it is really incredible how much information is out there somewhere.
my father was flying a wellington, serial no 3206 "T" from 14 OTU Cottesmore, on a mine laying operation. unfortunately i don't have details of the position of the sighting - they were recorded as being passed on to Air Sea Rescue by 14 OTU.
my father recalls being told some days later that a german bomber crew had been picked up from the reported position, so i assume they became POWs. i hope to try and find some trace of this now that i have some names to work with.
