Hello.
From 1941 through to 1944, the Lufwaffe (and Regia Aeronautica from 1940 to 1943)conducted regular raids over the island of Cyprus, aimed at the RAF airfields and the port facilities. The extreme range involved meant that airfields on Rhodes and Crete were most probabaly involved, and mostly were conducted by Ju88's, even though I've heard a mention of Bf109's involved (most certainly with LR fuel tanks). One Ju88 was shot down in 1944 with the arrival of Spitfire IX's of 127 sqn, of which Ju88 wreckage I have photos, along with a couple of Luftwaffe recce photos of airfields, but my questions are the following.
Does anyone know which Luftwaffe units would have been involved ?
My ultimate aim is to locate photos of Luftwaffe a/c flying over Cyprus, a difficult task, but does anyone have any suggestions ?
Are there any known websites for ex-Luftwaffe crews where one might place an appeal for such ? (These questions also apply to the Regia Aeronautica)
The Rumanian Ju88 of the USAAF Dayton Ohio, landed at Limassol in Cyprus in July 1943. Have tried to locate photos of it on Cyprus (IWM, PRO, USAAF Ohio), but without success.
Any help/suggestions gratefully accepted. Many thanks.
