Can anyone help - I'm attempting to produce a potted history of this unit (my document currently stands at approx 9500 words) from available secondary sources.

However,I am lacking in information about operations conducted by this unit on the Eastern Front. I would also be grateful for any assistance regarding losses, personnel etc.

One last thing - it is my intention to publish this Unit profile (and others) on the internet, any suggestions where I might achieve this would be appreciated as I do not have access to a web site of my own.

Regards and thanks

Further to the posting below an update is in order.

Since then the document has grown with the assistance of friends across the globe.

It now stands at approx 23k words across 57 pages.

As far as content is concerned it covers the following:-

1. Establishment - formation dates and detail, bases/dates, aircraft types used and an operational overview.

2. Diary - The bulk of the document, a day to day record including loss entries.

4. Personnel - a listing of all personnel found when raising the main diary document.

In addition the document contains a the inevitable table of references.

From this I have also created a table of Losses - the separate loss table exists currently both as a Word document and a searchable Excel spreadsheet. My intention would be to use the Excel sheet as a source to load a much neglected Access database with this data at some point.

In closing I would say the project has moved on considerably but has some way to go. So if anyone reads this and believes that they may be able to help with loss details, notes on personnel or operations please let me know.

As part of the ongoing proofing of my main document I have the following problem which I would like to resolve:-

I am currently attempting to trace to whereabouts, losses and any operations, of 4(F)./122 during the period Aug to Dec 1941.

So far all I have, for this period are the following base locations:-

Brodi ("Brodi" is Brody/75 km SE of Luck in what was then southeastern Poland - via LdZ)

Winitza (Ukraine) ("Winitza" is Vinnitsa/200 km southwest of Kiev in western Ukraine. The Germans spelled this "Winniza", not "Winitza" - via LdZ)

Neither are date specific but Brodi appears earlier in the source document.

The source is a copy of a document from the PRO (AIR24/1000 - MFIU/HQ/CSDIC/38) which contained a prisoner interogation report.

In addition I do not have any losses recorded for this unit during the above period - which is strange as even if they were in training there would have been some losses incurred.

Can anyone help as I would like to nail this one down.

I have not been able to trace any details of 5./122 during the period may to Sept 1942.

It has been suggested that this unit may have stood down following the heavy fighting around the Demyansk pocket. This would have enabled the unit to refit and grant home leave to it's surviving personel.

Can anyone provide information that confirms or contradicts the above - your assistance would be appreciated.

On page 198 of Shores' Fledgling Eagles there is an entry as follows:-
"During the afternoon six H-75s from GC I/4 were involved in an inconclusive engagement with a 1(F)./122 Do 17."

Does anyone have access to information that gives a rough indication as to the area that the combat took place in?

Many thanks and a Happy New Year.

Further to the postings above - I have now finally managed to get some, not all, of the notes on 122 onto a web site.

Please visit and let me know what you think.

This site will continue to grow with a variety of extra pages being added over the next few weeks. I will attempt to add the 1942 and 1943 diary entries during the next week.

Please send any corrections or additions to my e-mail address.

Many thanks

This link is in a site selling various militaria - Pannwitz's papers are being sold for $1300.
