An important book about the Luftwaffe Jagdfliegerverbände
Fri Dec 22 04:30:40 2000

There were very few, if any, words mentioned here about an important German book related to the Luftwaffe fighter units and their aircraft, titled: "Die Jagdfliegerverbände der Deutschen Luftwaffe, 1934 bis 1945" (ISBN 3-923457-54-5).
The mentioned book, written by four prominent Luftwaffe historians: Jochen Prien, Gerhard Stemmer, Peter Rodeike and Winfried Bock, was published by Struve Druck this year. The large-format book is intended to be the first tome of a 12-volume (!) series, covering the whole Luftwaffe fighter force in the aforementioned time period. The initial volume deals with the years spanning from the (re)birth of the Luftwaffe in 1934 until the end of the Polish Campaign, in late 1939. The book is illustrated with 452 black/white photos (the 453th one was left out) and several charts, maps, aircraft profiles, unit emblems, etc. Besides the illustrations, there are production figures for the various fighter aircraft types employed by the Luftwaffe (sadly no He 112, though), as well as comprehensive listings of air victory claims and losses of the Polish Campaign.
If the authors will succeed in covering in the same manner the whole history of the Jagdwaffe, then the 12-volume series will probably be the most authoritative and detailed recount of this very interesting topic.
Highly recommended.

I wrote something similar when I received the first flyer.

Struve is now announcing Pt. 2, however I haven't tried volume 1 yet.

Found it. One problem with these guys very expensive!! Vol 1 of Prien series goes 59.95 pounds or almost $100, whereas Christian Schmidt has them at around 100 DM or
about $56. Rather significant dirrernce.

Yes, but sometimes there are books better priced there. Also on special discount at Midland Counties. One must have luck to see the book on the right place and best
price...
Another point. Some shops places high postage and handling prices, like Motag on Jg300 book...

I agree 100% with Dénes' comments. If you are serious about the Jadgwaffe, you simply cannot afford to be without this series. Not only the photos and the narrative text,
even in German, but the lost lists are a treasure.

For those who have stated they have trouble fining Prien's Unit history series, the publisher, Steve Druck still has copies of all the series. They are not cheap, but again,
these are the best available. Rumors continue to swirl about whther the rest of the series will ever be translated to English. In the meantime, a bird in the hand...etc.

Hi, all.

For the books published by Struve, I would recommend the online bookshop at:
www.german-book.com (http://www.german-book.com)

Their homepage isn't that fancy, but their service is great and the overhead costs low (postage and packaging).

Regards,

Andreas

Prien books published by Struve, tips on where to buy
Wed Dec 27 12:29:13 2000

Hi, all

I have read a thread about this topic a couple of pages back, but took my liberty to post this new message on the topic here.

I have bought several sets of the Prien books, and I have found that for me (based in Europe) the best combination of pricing (usually the books are sold at Struve Druck standard price), overhead cost (postage etc) and response time has been:

German-Book-Shop
Literatur-Liedtke,
Huelchrather Str. 4,
D-50670 Koeln/Germany
Tel.: +49 221 731044 / Fax: +49 221 731016

http:\www.german-book.com

Their homepage isn't that fancy, but they have a good search-engine and all Struve books I believe.

Compared to other sources, You can save approximately US $ 40 on the latest offering from Prien/Stemmer/Rodeike/Bock.

As they can supply the Prien "Backcatalogue" as well, I thought this was useful information to the community.

Regards,

Andreas Brekken

I know, I know, they're 'so' expensive....

but for bang for the buck any and all of the various Prien books are the best of show for single-engined fighters. The latest 'Jagdverbande' series is particularly recommended. At about $60 per they really aren't that expensive (list for a typical Schiffer volume being about the same) given all that is contained within - photos illustrating various camo schemes, markings and ace's aircraft, detailed unit losses, claims, bases and unit commanders - really superb stuff here.

Add to that volumes from guys doing thorough unit histories such as Don Caldwell, Eric Mombeek, Walter Waiss, Ulf Balke, etc. one gets a full accounting of LW activities of the subject units.

Jim,

I'm unable to find any reviews of these books - can you give a brief summary - are they narrative histories or more of a statistical digest? Also, is there anything similar for the twin engined fighters?

I see that vol 3 covers the West up to end of the French campaign - am I right in assuming volume 4 covers (all of) the Battle of Britain?

TIA

Pete

Volume 4 is to be published in two parts and cover from 25.Jun 1940 thru 21.Jun 1941. Part 1 due end of this month to cover JG 2, 3, 26 & 27. Part 2 due Sept. 02, to cover rest of units. This series is more pictorial in content, focusing on camo and marking, but with all the details many of us like. The website shows all of the Prien/Rodeike/Stemmer/Bock titles.

Is JG 3 "Udet" coming out in English..?...Amzon.co.uk is showing the title "JG 3 Udet in World War II" - no publisher info but ISBN no. 0764316818 as due for publishing in Sep. 2002. Hope its' not a false alarm....
These outstandingly formidable books by Herr Prien et al. always makes me feel a little hollow, since one may never be able to read the text (though, being interested in the luftwaffe, one ought to learn German). Is there any plan of him being translated into English...? I recall a similar discussion on this board some time back, but can't remember any details .

162.40.190.192

With the permission of the authors of the series Die Jagdfliegerverbände der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1934 bis 1945, here are the *anticipated* contents of the remaining volumes:
- Vol. 5 Channel Front, Home Defence and Mediterranean 1941
- Vol. 6 Russia 1941
- Vol. 7 Channel Front, Home Defence and Mediterranean 1942
- Vol. 8 Russia 1942
- Vol. 9 Channel Front, Reichsverteidigung and Mediterranean 1943
- Vol. 10 Russia 1943
- Vol. 11 Channel Front, Reichsverteidigung and Mediterranean 1944
- Vol. 12 Russia 1944
- Vol. 13 All Fronts 1945

Full details will be supplied as an enclosure to Teil 5. I have no information on publication dates, and I suspect the authors have only educated guesses. All of this is subject to change, of course. Since completion of this massive undertaking is several years away (at three a year, which is undoubtedly optimistic, it would finish by 2006) there is no information available on future plans (which is to say, please don't ask either me or them!).

I certainly am looking forward with anticipation to the arrival of these future volumes.

Frank.
