Luftwaffe grave site in England - Sunderland

I was very recently sent some information regarding a Luftwaffe gravesite that was located near this person. He was wondering if the German authorities and the airmen's families were ever notified of the location of said graves.

I had replied that after sixty years, the surviving family members and the German government would very likely be aware of their location, as the Allies were kept abreast of their airmen buried in France and such. I could see no reason why the English wouldn't tell the Germans where these men were buried.

I was, however, very curious to see the gravesite and he was kind enough to send me some photo's. I made a small webpage and is is located here -

http://www.luftwaffe-experten.com/graves/index.html

I would like to complete this story. Can anyone provide details about the pilots? Units, aircraft, details of loss?

Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Dave,

The other details you require is as follows;

16.02.41. He 111 Wnr.3085 5J + GP of KG4 "General Wever"

Hptm. H. Styra
Obfw. Wilhelm Beetz
Gefr. Franz Janeschitz
Uffz. Helmut Jeckstadt
Uffz. Karl Brutzen

Hit by AA fire then struck balloon cable. Crashed at Bent's Park, South Shields. Obfw. Beetz baled out but was killed when he landed on trolley-bus wires.

15.01.42. Ju 88 Wnr.1612 S4 + EH of Ku.Fl.Gr.1/506

Lt. Dieter Andresen.

Shot down by AA fire and crashed in the sea off the Tyne.
Andresen's body was washed ashore on the 27th Jan.
Other crew members were Fw. F. Gruschka, Uffz. J. Scholze, Uffz. F. Pett. All missing, presumed killed. Possible that one is interred in the grave marked simply "Ein Deutsche Soldat".

This information was extracted from Bill Norman's excellent work "Luftwaffe over the North" a very well researched book!!

Regards,

Melvin.

Dave,
You might like to know that my book BROKEN EAGLES 2(Luftwaffe losses over Northumberland and Durham, 1939-1945) gives full details of 64 German aircraft (inluding those of Beetz and Andresen) lost over these two counties. It is due to be published c. September of this year. It is the companion volume to BROKEN EAGLES (Luftwaffe losses over Yorkshire, 1939-1945)which was published in October 2001. The 'Yorkshire' volume records the loss of 72 German aircraft and their crews. Both volumes contain full appendices of crew and aircraft details. A visit to www.billnorman.co.uk (http://www.billnorman.co.uk) might be of interest to you.

In view of the Regierungsrat article, 26 June, it may be of interest that Franz Selinger and I are writing a book, 'Wekusta: Luftwaffe Meteorological Reconnaissance Units & Operations 1938-1945', to be published by Hikoki.
This will include coverage of the items referred to by Bill Norman, Claus Nattermann, et al.
If possible, Franz and I would be pleased, Claus, to receive the details you have about Westa 5 and 6. Any information published would, of course, be duly acknowledged by us.

If the date was 23 August 1943 this could be the one. Ju88D-1 D7+FH wnr 430804. Oblt Karl Rapp(pilot), Reg.Rat. Otto Krug(meteorologist),Uffz. Alfred Schulz (W/op), Fw.Otto Kühle(mechanic). Probably the one claimed by two Beaufighters [W/Cdr Michael Constable-Maxwell and F/Lt John Surman] of 604 Sqdn, Scorton, North Yorks. Location stated to be in North Sea, "130 miles NE of river Tees". On his return to base, Constable-Maxwell, a staunch Roman Catholic, immediately went to the nearby monastery and asked a priest to say Mass for the German crew. This was the Staffelabzeichen of 7/KG 4 which then became 7/KG 30. This ac crash-landed at Duggleby, Yorkshire in October 40 by which time 7/KG 4 (and the rest of III/KG 4) had been transferred to be III/KG 30
