Feldpostummern and Luftwaffe units...
Sat Apr 13 13:41:50 2002
158.195.16.233
HI all.
I have a specific question.
Is it possible to identify the Luftwaffe unit according to the Feldpostnummer? did the units have their own Feldpostnummer during the all time of WWII? Or it was related to the airfield?
I would greatly appreciate if you can sent me some list of the feldpostnummers and the units who owned them.
I am interested in 1943-44, mainly Austrian area.
Thanks for any help...

The Feldpostnummern ran all the way up to around 85000, and many of them were issued and reissued as many as 5 or 6 times as units were formed and disbanded. People look them up in the following reference:
Kannapin, Norbert, Die deutsche Feldpostübersicht 1939-1945. 3 Bde (I – III) (Osnabrück, 1980-82).
This is a massive tabulation of all of the Feldpostnummern.

To sort these out, you need the 3 Norbert Kannapin volumes on the Feldpostübersicht (Biblio Verlag, early 'eighties), or the Rosch book on Luftwaffe Codes and Markings (Schiffer Publishing, 1995) or the 4-volume Jochen Prien history of JG 77. It's all there.

FpN for 15./JG 52
Tue Jul 30 04:49:24 2002
205.188.208.9
According to the Kannapin book, this FpN first appeared sometime in the period July 30 41 to Feb 28th 42. The Staffel was "formed" as 15./JG 52 in October 41 as the Luftwaffe term for the IV Fighter Group (IV. Lovacka skupina) of the Croatian Air Force. The unit was actually created on July 14 41 at Zagreb and had Luftwaffe uniforms when subsequently training in Germany.
Therefore the start date for the use of FpN L36348 is unclear but it was probably from no later than October 41.

Hi,
Here is one book: Fliegerhorstkommandanturen und Flugplatze der deutschen Luftwaffe 1935-1945 by Gianfranco Mattielo, published by Biblio Verlag
I understand it contains almost all of them.

Alex,
I have that book and it's somewhat disapointing in that it just list the airfields without any more detail.
For instance,
"Rethimon
Nordkueste Kreta."
AND
Pl. Kmdo. Rethymon der Fl. H. Kmdtr. E 203/XVII (GR)
FPNr 53277 (30.6.44)
06.41-1944 in Einsatz...
It does give the Feld Post nummern for each airfield.

Hi Carlos;
Thanks for the info on the book that Al mentioned.
All I need is the squadron or unit that was stationed at certain air bases in the fall of '44. I am cross referencing a missing Luftwaffe cousins trail and know the bases that the American was at who found the item.
It is not a long list, they are all near Metz France. May I email you the list? But would you be kind enough to have a fast look into your book for me?
Please advise, your help is most appreciated.
Cheers;

Russ,
The book does NOT mention any LW units stationed at the bases in question. All it gives is the official designation of the airfield, a FPN, and some other sundry info.

Where can one find Feldpost Nummers?
Wed May 21 21:10:55 2003

Is there a comprehensive, up-to-date listing of all Feldpost Nummers for the entire war? If so, where can such knowledge be found? If not, where can one find the largest accumulation of identified F.Pnr's?
TIA!

Although I do not own it, there is a 3 volume set:
Die deutsche Feldpostubersicht by Norbert Kannapin that was published by Biblio Verlag, 1980-1982.
Hope this helps,

Hello,
I recently got a CD-Rom from a reseller with a very handy database of Feldpostnumbers. Now I am looking for the catalog of CD-Roms but www.vmd-media.com nor the email address do respond. Any ideas whether this company does still exist?
