Re. New book rumors? - Books in french

Three books in french languages are waited.

JY Lorant is finishing his work on JG300 and will be available that year, Pierre Watteeuw will published in march/april "The losses of Jagdwaffe in France 1939-1940" with precise places of crashes and photos. At last after more 25 years old of researches, Serge Joanne will published in spring his very long waited book on Bloch 152. Of course it is a french aircraft but also used by Luftwaffe.

Sincerely,

Bertrand H

Request - photos to illustrate book
Fri Mar 1 19:52:10 2002
157.185.86.235

I would like to borrow photographs of these Luftwaffe personalities to illustrate a book I am editing:

General der Flieger Josef Kammhuber
Generalleutnant Josef “Beppo” Schmid
Generalmajor Hans-Detlef Herhuth von Rohden (historian)
Dr. Willli Messerschmitt (designer)
Generaloberst Hubert Weise (Flak general)
General der Flieger Wolfgang Martini (signals chief)
Major Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer (night fighter ace)
Major Heinrich Ruppel (fighter controller)
Major G.S. Sandmann (fighter controller)
Major Josef Scholls (night fighter ace)

The photographs are for FIGHTING THE BOMBERS. This is a book of immediate post-war accounts and interrogations by those listed above (among others). It is a follow-on to THE LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER FORCE: A VIEW FROM THE COCKPIT that I edited a few years ago and, like it, will also be published by Greenhill books in England.

I am looking for unscreened photographs (e.g., not broken up into a dot pattern). I will return any photographs provided after copying and would be happy to send a copy of FIGHTING THE BOMBERS to the source of a usable photograph, along with my thanks.

Sincerely,
David Isby

bad news

Hi,

I am looking for same. Osterkamp as Kommodore as popular "Old Eagle" was logically good subject for wartime photographers but I am afraid that no photos of his plane ever appeared. Moreover in recent Jagdwaffe volume written by German team Prien, Bock, Stemmer and Rodeike, there is just 1 confirmed victory achieved by Osterkamp during WW II. All others are unconfirmed.

Could you share with me more details about Theo´s Albatros? I know just lozenge covered Fokker D.VIII. If somebody would have lead to photos of Theo´s black/yellow stripped Fokkers, I would be most grateful.

Regards

Jan

Theo's Albatros
Tue Apr 9 00:42:58 2002

Hi Jan,

That is bad news. I know Theo's Albatros D.V from July 1917 had mauve /green wings and horizontal stab. The fuselage natural wood stippled with mauve/green. Two black fuselage bands with thin white edges. Yellow spinner and forward cowling. Black(?) wheel centres and the serial number D.2130/17 with a small 24 above serial number.
I understand his Fokker D.VII had black and yellow bands but other details I cannot say.
If you are interested post a add on "the aerodrome" forum.
I am sure you will get a response from either Dan-San Abbott or Greg Van Wyngarden, both notable experts on W.W.I German aircraft colours and markings.
By the way , which W.W.II victory was confirmed?

WW II confirmed kill

Hi Marlon,

Thanks for your lead!
According to the Jagwaffe volume 3 the only Osterkamp´s confirmed kill was Fokker G-1 claimed on May 12, 1940 over Soesterberg with Stab/JG 51. His three other kills were not confirmed.

regards

Jan

FIGHTING THE BOMBERS

Coming out within the next year from Greenhill Press in London is FIGHTING THE BOMBERS. This is a follow-on to THE LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER FORCE: THE VIEW FROM THE COCKPIT. It concentrates on (1) the history of the defense of the Reich (narratives from Kammhuber, von Rohden, Weisse, "Beppo" Schmid) and (2) stuff that would not fit in the first book, including stuff on radar, fighter direction, night fighters (including Schnaufer and other aces and fighter controllers).

Hi Paulo...

I had my copy of Section 4 arrive here in the UK this week - but am still waiting for Section 3!

On that note, can anybody supply me with an email addy for the Robert Forsyth (or anybody else for that matter) at Classic Publications? Their web site directs me to Midland Counties/Ian Allen and i cannot get any answer from them. I did converse with Robert after winning a runners-up prize in their Luftwaffe writing competition but mislaid it some weeks later...

Thanks in advance,

Have you tried classic@classic-books.co.uk ? Got responses at this addy in early June ...
I have noticed one thing at midlandbooks@compuserve.com that they take some time before returning e-mails...

Cheers,

How Many 190s Do You See?
Thu Oct 17 06:36:03 2002
198.111.63.117

Please imagine you are looking at a side view of a formation of B-17s under attack from Fw-190s.

Assume the following:
1. It is an all out attack with less regard for safety then usual.
2. You are far enough away to easily see two three bomber plane elements of bombers from lt-rt.
3. The 190s are flying abreast in a frontal attack, meaning: some could be very close and some far away, some would just be coming into view and some leaving.
4. There is no fighter escort.
5. What do you think would be the maximum number of 190s you might see in your view?
Two, four, six, eight, ten? More?

6. Would I be correct to place a mix of Bf109s with 190s?

Any replys are valuable.
Thanks,
Bob

There are two chapters (with USAAF-drawn diagrams) on such attacks written by Oberstleutnant Walther Dahl in:
Adolf Galland et al, THE LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER FORCE: THE VIEW FROM THE COCKPIT, London, 1997, Greenhill.

A diagram and description of such an attack from a B-17's view is in:
David C. Isby, AT THE CONTROLS: THE BOEING B-17 FLYING FORTRESS, London, 1998, Haper Collins

David,
Many thanks for the suggestion.

Any idea of how to obtain a copy of both books? I'll check Amazon but assume the worst that they are out of print.

Did you write the 2nd book?

Thanks again, Bob

The Galland book is in Greenhill's current catalog. If Amazon cannot provide you might try their site.

The B-17 book is out of print. Copies appear for sale at Advanced Book Exchange (ABE.com), the used book site. Search under author's name and there should be no problem.

I edited the Galland book and wrote the B-17 book.

At last, the long waited Hors série about the losses of Jagdwaffe in France is available. This issue of 118 pages with many B&W photos and 16 nice profiles covers the period sept 1939-december 1940. The Belgian author, Pierre Watteeeuw is sometimes on this board and has worked with the best French and Belgian researchers (Mombeek, Roba, Taghon, Archambault...).

This book costs 24 euros and publisbed by the Editions LELA PRESSE.
