September 12.
New information says that the plane was not blown up as stated earlier. The bombs were removed and the plane salvaged for scrap metal. This approach is a much more logical approach to the local area.

Louis Means was the flight navigator on Frank Clemons B17. He survived the war but lost his right leg. Many years after the war (1974) Louis returned to Cuxhaven to see the Nurse that helped him. Seated in the link below that is a toast is 2nd Lt. Louis Means and his nurse from the Cuxhaven Naval Hospital, Berta Koopman. Standing is her husband Karl Koopman and he was a Harbor Engineer in Cuxhaven.

Pilot Frank B Clemons was B17 pilot. He was shot down near Cuxhaven Germany 15-May-1943 by Gunther Specht. Four of the crew survived my Uncle Frank and five others did not. His plane crash landed in high tide at Elbe Estuary with a full load of bombs aboard. Local fisherman removed the bodies and helped to blow up the plane and bombs on 4-June-1943.
My hope is to find any photos of the crash site and confirmation on how many bodies were removed. The number on Uncle Frank's plane was 229744.
I am working on a you tube tribute to my Uncle Frank and his crew.
