Default Raid by P-38's on Foggia airfields

On August 25, 1943, 100+ P-38's strafed airfields in and around Foggia. Three fighters from the 82nd FG were shot down while attacking the Salsola field, #3.
What German or Italian pilot claimed credit for those downed and what Group was he with?

Hi Don,

Several German units scrambled to intercept the P-38s, and the following Luftwaffe victory claims were submitted:

- Major Johannes Steinhoff, Stab Jagdgeschwader 77, P-38 destroyed five kilometres south of San Severo: altitude of 20 metres, at 09:58, his 160th aerial victory
- Major Johannes Steinhoff, Stab Jagdgeschwader 77, P-38 destroyed eight kilometres south of San Severo: altitude of 20 metres, 09:59, his 161st aerial victory
- Major Johannes Steinhoff, Stab Jagdgeschwader 77, P-38 destroyed ten kilometres south-south-west of San Severo: altitude of 20 metres, 10:00, his 162nd aerial victory
- Oblt. Theo Lindemann, Stab Jagdgeschwader 77, P-38 destroyed at San Severo, 10:01, his third aerial victory
- Major Johannes Steinhoff, Stab Jagdgeschwader 77, P-38 destroyed fifteen kilometres south-south-west of San Severo: altitude of 20 metres, his 163rd aerial victory
- Fw. Helmut Kühl, 9. Staffel of Jagdgeschwader 53, P-38F destroyed 70 kilometres south of Foggia: altitude of 6,000 m, 10:39, his fifteenth aerial victory

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Default Raid on Foggia Airfields by P-38's

Andrew, Thanks for your e on April '15. Just now getting back to it. A recent source suggests that two Macchi's from a field south of Foggia may have brought down three P-38's, my brother being one of them. Would you have any information on that base and the names of Italian pilots with victories on August 25, 1943? Don

Hi Don,

Unfortunately, my knowledge about the Italian air force is rather limited. What is your source regarding the Macchis?

Nicola Malizia's book, Italy: Primary Target, suggests that Macchi C.202s of 21 Gruppo Au. C.T. probably engaged the USAAF bombing raid against Foggia on 25 August 1943.

Cheers,
Andrew A.
