I'm looking for good books on the Do 17 Z, K, M, P. I am primarily interested in the aircraft itself, rather than its operational use. But I will not be dismissive of any suggestions.

I mean good books dedicated to the Do 17. There are good photos here and there, there were a few monographs (Waffenarsenal, Polish ...).

We're still waiting for a good book (and a decent Do 17 kit as well; I'm afraid we'll sooner see a 1/32 Saunders-Roe Princess than a good 1/48 Do 17). I hope you're not too old to wait (and wait and wait ...)

Dornier Do 17: The Yugoslav story
Wed Jun 16, 2024 20:36
212.124.160.7

Together with my friend Dragan Savic, I am currently finishing a manuscript with the above mentioned title. Contrary to what you are looking for, it will do very little with technical aspects of Do 17 and much more with operational history. It will cover the following themes:
- purchase and pre-war use of Do 17Ka in Royal Yugoslav AF
- operational record of Do 17Ka in April War 1941
- Luftwaffe Do 17 units in Yugoslavia 1941 - 1945
- Croat Legion within Luftwaffe (training, Eastern Front & Yugoslavia)
- Croat AF operations with Do 17Ka, E, M & Z
- Bulgarian AF Do 17's over Yugoslavia
- Partisan and post-war Yugoslav Do 17s
Text is based on archival sources from Yugoslav military archive, various archives in Croatia, BA MA, PRO, NAW T microfilms, numerous interviews with former airmen and generous help from many friends in Serbia and abroad. There would be extensive Appendix coverage iatn the end, including list of all VVKJ Do 17Ka and their history, reconstruction of Royal Yugoslav AF 3.Bomber Wing combat diary in April War, losses of Luftwaffe Do 17s in Yugoslavia, list of Luftwaffe Do 17 units in Yugoslavia with commanders and bases, losses of Croat Legion Do 17's, list of all Croat Do 17s and their history, Croat Do 17 units and CO's, list of post-war Yugoslav Do 17's and their history.
In all probability book will be of B5 size, on some 128 pages, with over 100 photos, most of them unpublished, and some 30 color profiles. It will be published in Serbia, but in English.
Date of publishing? Still not known. If everything goes smoothly until the end of this year. If it sees the light of the day in less than a year it will be great.
Anyway, more about it will follow...

Two books on the Do 17
Wed Jun 16, 2024 21:49
128.135.56.76

Hello Steven,

Although neither is anywhere close to definitive, two books on the Do 17 are:

Kocent-Zielinski: 'Dornier Do 17 Part 1' (Air Show series [unnumbered]; Kagero [Poland], 1998; in Polish; 48 pages)

and:

Smith: 'The Dornier Do 17 & 215' (Aircraft Profile series, No. 164; Profile Publications [UK], 1971; 16 pages)

I don't recall hearing that Kagero published a second part of the Air Show book ... but then again this aircraft isn't one of my primary interests.

As indicated by other posters, the Do 17 family has been sadly neglected. While we wait for the ultimate reference, here are some of the resources that have already been published:

- Schiffer Military History #25: "The Flying Pencil - Dornier Do 17 and Do 215" by Heinz Nowarra, 1990, ISBN 0-88740-236-4
Translation of the Waffen-Arsenal title. Not much text, but good photos.

- Kagero Air Show Series: "Dornier Do-17, cz.I" by Edward Kocent-Zielinski, 1997, ISBN 83-907005-2-2
All text in Polish, but lots of high-quality photos, including cockpit interiors of the E, M, P and Z.

- Air Enthusiast #30 March-June 1986, p.38-53: "The Annals of the 'Pencil'"
Excellent 16-page article on the development and operational history of the early Do 17 variants, namely the E, F, K, M, and P. Briefly discusses the Z and R models as well. It was interesting to read that some Do 17s were operational throughout the war -- Schleppgruppe 1 destroyed its 11 Do 17Es at Hohenmauth on May 8th, 1945.

- Warbirds Fotofax Series: "Dornier Bombers and Reconnaissance Aircraft 1925-1945" by Manfred Griehl, Arms & Armour Press, 1990, ISBN 1-85409-000-3
Contains 7 pages of Do 17 photos and drawings, plus some tables of production data, technical specs, and Do 17 units & their unit codes.

- Profile Publications #164: "Dornier Do 17 & 215" by Richard Smith
Good coverage of the basics.

- Squadron/Signal Aircraft No. Three: "Luftwaffe Bombers in Action" by Uwe Feist and Mike Dario, 1972
Contains 7 pages of Do 17 photos.

HTH,
Leon Venter

Do 17 books To Steven-Modeldad
Wed Jun 23, 2024 12:29
62.248.223.89

Hello, the original thread is so far away from the top that I'll start a new one.
There are two other good books where there are a lot of good photos on Do 17Z. The older one is Suomen Ilmavoimien Historia 2 Dornier Do 17 Z Junkers Ju 88A-4 by K. Keskinen K. Stenman K. Niska. Forssa 197x (different editions). Mostly in Finnish but some 6 pages English summary. Many good photos on Finnish AF's Do 17Zs, 2 pages of technical drawings but almost impossible to obtain nowadays but they are producing new editions of the oldest ones of this series (Fokker XXI and Bf 109G already out and these have captions also in English)

The other is Lentäjän Näkökulma IV by Jukka Raunio. Forssa 1998. It's more on the a/c and on what it was as a flying machine. Also lots of photos and many technical drawings, also cockpit drawnings and good line drawings. But it all in Finnish. So the Chapter on the structure of Do 17Z begins "Dornierin siipiprofiili oli amerikkalainen NACA 2212. Siiven V-kulma oli 2 astetta 20 minuuttia jättöreunasta mitattuna ja asetuskulma 2 astetta. Alumiiniseoslevyistä valmistetussa siivessä oli kaksi salkoa, kaaret ja pintalevy..."
On the plus side the book handles also Bristol Blenheim, Tupolev SB 2M100 & 2M103, Iljushin DB-3M & Il-4, Petljakov Pe-2 & Pe-3 and Ju 88A-4. All but DB-3M & Il-4 with many technical drawings besides photos, on DB-3M & Il-4 only two technical drawings.

The following is a description of a document seen on eBay:

'Merkblatt ober Do 17 F

Beschreibung

Altavista translation:

'Instruction book on Do 17 F

Description

To the offer here an original instruction card comes for flying personnel such as pilot, radio operator, flight engineer etc. the Dornier Do 17 F. Therein the different control regulations as well as emergency procedures are described. In addition designs with descriptions of the instrument panel and cockpit are in the instruction. Interesting regulation to the "flying pencil".'

Richard
