Just nitpicking, but apart from being the Nazi symbol it was at the time the official flag of Germany, so in terms of nationality markings it was no different than the French tricoleur. The colors red white and black being those of the 2nd German Reich.

Of course the Luftwaffe was the essential Nazi arm of the regular armed forces. It did not carry the old traditions and was to be new and fresh, just like the Nazi government that created it (the army always remained Prussian in tradition, the Navy had strong Imperial ties, what remained was the new Luftwaffe).

You knew this already Graham, but I couldn't stop myself for the benefit of the original poster.

Appreciate the very simple, yet methodical treatment of the pre- & early-war schemes. Any news as yet on the later-war schemese comeing on-line?
